Nursery at Brompton Community Primary School

Listening comes before reading at Brompton: nursery children sing, explore sounds around them and use instruments to develop their awareness of sound. This gives the provision a concrete starting point for early literacy, with activities children can join in before they can read words.
The nursery is known as F1, or Foundation Stage 1, within Brompton Community Primary School on Station Road in Brompton, Northallerton. The school’s provision starts at three. Nursery therefore sits within a primary school setting, with its own Foundation Stage 1 class teacher.
Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics are the named programmes used to develop phonics. In nursery, the emphasis is on listening: environmental sounds, singing and instruments help children distinguish what they hear. These are practical beginnings to learning about the sounds in language.
The early years approach responds to the child. At the inspection on 24 and 25 January 2024, adults knew children individually and adapted both learning and the environment to their needs. In January 2024, early years assessment informed changes to activities for individual children. For parents, the useful detail is that assessment involved everyday interactions, with adjustments made as children’s needs changed.
Classrooms also feature in the daily routine: morning Foundation Stage drop-off is at 8.45, with children going directly into their classrooms. F1 lunch is at 11.45, and the afternoon session ends at 3.00. These points give families concrete anchors for the nursery day.
Individual knowledge of children was a feature of the January 2024 early years findings. Adults used that understanding when organising the learning environment, so support and activities could respond to the child rather than follow an unchanged plan.
For conversations about additional needs, the school’s SEND coordinator can be contacted at senco@brompton.n-yorks.sch.uk. This provides a direct contact for families raising questions about their child’s needs.
Across the school, safeguarding concerns and disclosures are recorded using CPOMS, and procedures follow the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership. Brompton also participates in Operation Encompass: police share information about police-attended domestic abuse incidents involving its children before the next school day. That gives staff information relevant to a child’s care before the day begins.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate steps; choosing F1 should not be taken as securing a later school place.
The school office is the enquiry contact, on 01609 772657 or admin@brompton.n-yorks.sch.uk. The address is Station Road, Brompton, Northallerton, DL6 2RE.
For collection planning, F1’s afternoon session finishes at 3.00. Keep that nursery finishing time in mind when arranging the journey home.
