Communication and language were a clear focus in Blackthorn’s early years provision at the September 2022 inspection. This is Blackthorn Primary School’s own nursery in Northampton, with entry from the term after a child turns three. It sits within a primary school belonging to Northampton Primary Academy Trust, so families are choosing nursery provision within a wider school organisation.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 13 and 14 September 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Communication took a central role in the school’s early years provision at the September 2022 inspection. In September 2022, children used words for shapes confidently, including rectangle and circle, while adults used questions to extend their thinking. The practical emphasis is on children explaining what they understand, with adults helping them take an idea further.
That gives parents a concrete picture of learning: recognising a shape is accompanied by talking about it. Vocabulary is part of understanding, rather than simply a collection of words to repeat. The September 2022 early years findings also described a stimulating learning setting and children who approached learning positively. Together, these details point to an early years experience where conversation and participation matter.
Relationships provide another clear feature of the September 2022 early years findings. Adults and children related warmly to one another, and children treated both staff and their peers respectfully. For a young child, those everyday interactions matter alongside learning: listening, responding and getting along with other people form part of the experience.
Family support also sits within the wider school. Its Family Support Team includes a lead worker and a family support worker, who help families reach additional services and tackle practical tasks such as forms. This gives parents a route into help when difficulties extend beyond the classroom.
An Early Help Assessment can bring that support together through an initial discussion, an action plan and Team Around the Family meetings, usually every six to eight weeks. Participation is voluntary and requires parental consent; parents can end the assessment whenever they choose. The school also has an Inclusion Lead and directs families towards the West Northamptonshire Local Offer for SEND information across education, health and social care.
Separate applications. Attending Orchard Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Blackthorn. Families must apply again through their home local authority, even if their chosen school is in another council area. Nursery attendance gives no priority under the school’s 2026–27 oversubscription criteria.
Those criteria prioritise children who are looked after or previously looked after, followed by siblings, children of staff, children whose nearest equivalent state school is Blackthorn, and then other children. Families should therefore treat choosing a nursery and obtaining a Reception place as separate decisions, rather than assuming that time spent at Orchard settles the later application.
Blackthorn Primary School is on Waingrove, Northampton, NN3 8EP. The school office can be contacted on 01604 407254. Contact the office to enquire about visiting Orchard Nursery.
