At the November 2022 inspection, woodland learning gave Briar Hill’s early years provision a distinctive outdoor dimension. The nursery belongs to Briar Hill Primary School & Nursery on Thorn Hill in Northampton, placing it within a primary school rather than a separate childcare setting.
At the Ofsted inspection on 15 and 16 November 2022, early years provision was judged Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years phase, rather than constituting a separate nursery rating. For parents, the relevant strengths are the learning environment and the activities children experience.
At the November 2022 inspection, outdoor learning had a concrete setting: the woodland school. Children were enthusiastic about using it, and adults planned activities that extended their learning. This gave the early years experience an outdoor element with a learning purpose, rather than simply time outside.
At the November 2022 inspection, the early years environment supported engaging activities. The school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) mathematics focus includes comparing quantities, recognising patterns and understanding spatial relationships. These are foundations for thinking about number, shape and how things relate to one another.
Talk for Writing is a school curriculum approach, using spoken language to help children develop vocabulary and understanding. Nursery has its own writing curriculum planning. The emphasis on talk matters for young children: language is part of learning, rather than something reserved for a separate writing task.
Settling starts with a home visit before children join Nursery at the beginning of the year. Staff introduce themselves to the child and discuss relevant information with parents. That creates an opportunity to share needs and family circumstances before the first sessions. Early years baseline assessments then contribute to identifying additional needs.
Communication has a direct route. Parents can message nursery teachers through ClassDojo, while school event information reaches families through MCAS. These serve different practical purposes: a question about your child can go to the teaching team, while event updates help families plan.
For SEND concerns, the first conversation is with the class teacher. The school’s support structure includes a SENDCo and an Assistant SENDCo with autism expertise. Where extra provision is needed, teachers, support staff and specialists agree the response, giving parents a route from an initial concern to more tailored support.
Food arrangements include free milk for children under five. Across the school, Caterlink cooks meals on site and accommodates children’s dietary requirements; meals require advance booking. The school promotes restrictions on nut products but does not claim to be nut-free, a distinction families managing allergies should take seriously.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and is not a priority criterion in the school’s admission arrangements. Families must make a separate Reception application through West Northamptonshire County Council. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is midnight on 15 January 2027. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
For enquiries, telephone 01604 768392 or email enquiries@briarhillprimary.co.uk. Keep confidential information out of that shared mailbox. Families can arrange a school tour by calling the office, with their child welcome to join them. A tour provides an opportunity to see the school setting before deciding whether to apply.
