Children’s interests help shape the learning at Cogenhoe’s Pre-School, within the primary school on York Avenue. The school aims to put emotional wellbeing first in its early years provision and adapt learning to each child. That gives the nursery a clear emphasis: confidence and curiosity alongside early learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning with children’s personal development. At Cogenhoe, themes draw on Talk for Writing, while planning also responds to interests that emerge during activities. Children therefore have opportunities to influence what the group explores, alongside the planned themes.
An open-plan classroom and outdoor learning space form the early years environment. Children can move between learning areas whatever the weather and choose resources independently. For a child drawn to outdoor activity, learning need not stay indoors. Practical exploration also lets children revisit ideas through doing, rather than only listening.
Across the early years provision, small-group phonics, Book Talk and daily maths provide planned teaching alongside that exploration. Number and shape learning continues through practical activities inside and outside. These arrangements describe the wider EYFS provision rather than a separate timetable for Pre-School.
In June 2025, Ofsted found that communication and language ran through Pre-School activities and that the early years curriculum had a clear structure. Talking is part of the learning throughout, rather than an isolated activity.
Tapestry connects home and the early years team. Each child has an individual online journal where parents can view observations and assessments, then contribute their own photographs, videos and comments. This gives staff a way to see skills and interests that children demonstrate at home as well as in the setting.
For concerns about learning, parents can approach the class teacher; the school’s SEN coordinator is reachable through the office. Across the school, teaching assistants support children with additional needs, including individual support for some pupils, and two assistants work on speech and language difficulties. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a nursery staffing ratio.
Family support includes Cogenhoe Cares, a Thursday-morning opportunity to talk with the pastoral lead without making an appointment. Parents can discuss concerns or seek help with difficulties outside school as well as within it.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the West Northamptonshire Council admissions route; the online application deadline is 15th January.
Attendance at the nursery does not confer priority under the stated oversubscription criteria. First priority covers looked-after children and previously looked-after children who ceased to be looked after through adoption, a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order. Children living in the linked area follow, then children with a sibling continuing at the school at admission, then other applicants. Treat the Reception application as a separate decision.
Preparation for starting school includes visits to children’s pre-school or nursery, family picnics and transition days. Those activities help children become familiar with the next setting; they do not change admission entitlement.
