Nursery at Green Oaks Primary Academy

Creative work indoors and larger creations outside give Green Oaks’ early years provision a practical, expressive character. Its nursery sits within a mainstream primary academy on Whiston Road in Kingsthorpe, Northampton, with provision starting at age three. This is a school nursery: the everyday focus is on young children’s learning, care and growing independence.
Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds Revised is used in the nursery as well as the school. Alongside this named approach to phonics, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes Expressive Arts and Design. In parent terms, that means experimenting with materials, colour and texture, and exploring what happens when different media are combined. Children have daily creative opportunities, giving them repeated chances to try techniques rather than making art an occasional activity.
Creative areas are provided outside and indoors. Children work at different scales, with the outdoor environment supporting bigger creations. Adults encourage them to talk about their work and share it with others, so making something also becomes an opportunity to practise communication.
Independence needs attention too. At the January 2025 inspection, nursery activities and resources were being arranged to help children begin doing more for themselves. Across early years, however, curriculum planning needed further development, and opportunities to prepare for writing were too limited. These concerns matter alongside the creative provision: parents should look closely at how activities develop both practical independence and early writing.
Before starting, families are contacted towards the end of the preceding term to discuss their needs, agree a start date and arrange a stay and play session. That gives children an introduction to the setting before their nursery attendance begins, while parents have a chance to discuss the arrangements.
Support for additional needs takes place within mainstream provision. Green Oaks works with external agencies, and the Early Help Assessment brings together children’s and families’ needs in a shared plan. West Northants SEND Information, Advice and Support Service is another named source of support for families.
In January 2025, emerging special educational needs and disabilities were recognised quickly, including among early years children. Across the school, however, some teaching and resources were insufficiently adapted, leaving work too difficult for some pupils with SEND. For families needing additional support, identifying a need is only the first step; suitable activities and attention to gaps in prior learning matter just as much.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority. For the September 2026 intake, the stated route was Northamptonshire County Council’s admissions process, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The initial nursery enquiry route is the Academy’s nursery admissions form, after which the child joins the waiting list. The Academy office can be contacted on 01604 715249 or at admin@greenoaksprimaryacademy.org. The address is Whiston Road, Kingsthorpe, Northampton, NN2 7RR.
