Children’s interests help shape the learning at Lumbertubs Nursery, with investigations, stories and independence forming part of its early years approach. This is the nursery within Lumbertubs Primary School in Northampton, welcoming children from age 3. Its teaching team shares the week between two teachers, alongside an early years practitioner and a nursery assistant.
At the Ofsted inspection on 11 and 12 January 2023, early years provision was judged Good within the school inspection. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach brings learning and personal development together. Lumbertubs emphasises communication, physical and emotional development, and growing independence. Its named Curriculum Cogs sit alongside continuous provision: opportunities for children to explore and pursue interests, with activities adjusted to their needs.
Hands-on investigations combine activities directed by adults with those led by children. The school aims to broaden children’s experience through art, music and learning about occupations. Stories and nursery rhymes support vocabulary, while exploring social situations gives children opportunities to practise communicating and acting independently. These are useful connections between learning and the everyday skills a young child needs.
Sharing and turn-taking connected social development with group learning in the January 2023 early years findings. Children were happy to learn together, and their curiosity accompanied a readiness to adopt routines. Early reading included learning sounds in a planned sequence. Together, these findings give a picture of learning through shared experiences as well as the beginnings of literacy.
Teaching responsibilities are split across the week: one teacher covers Monday to Wednesday, and another Thursday and Friday. An early years practitioner and nursery assistant complete the team. Families therefore have a clear weekly teaching pattern to understand when discussing their child’s experience.
For children attending under the 30-hour funding arrangement, lunch is brought from home or a hot meal can be ordered through the school office. Packed lunches should contain healthy food and come in a labelled lunch box. Food is separate from the charge for additional adult supervision, so families need to plan both the meal and the extended hour.
SEND and inclusion enquiries go to the school’s SENDCo or Senior Inclusion Support Manager. The school works with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists, giving families routes to discuss different support needs. Welfare concerns are recorded through MyConcern and passed to the safeguarding team.

Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate steps. Choosing this nursery does not remove the need to apply again, even when a child is already attending.
