Conversation, picture books and learning through play give Parklands its character. This maintained nursery school on Spinney Hill Road in Northampton caters for children aged two to five, including provision for two-year-olds. It is a nursery school in its own right, with practitioners, teachers and leaders working together.
Parklands belongs to the Foundations for Children Nursery Schools Federation, which brings together four nursery schools under a shared executive headteacher and governing body. At the June 2025 ungraded inspection, children were learning successfully, cooperating with one another and receiving support closely matched to their needs. That inspection awarded no new grade.
Language runs through play. Adults describe what children are doing and introduce vocabulary as opportunities arise, pairing new words with pictures to help children understand them. Learning follows a deliberate sequence, while activities respond to each child's interests and next steps. The practical benefit is that conversation becomes part of learning rather than a separate exercise.
Picture books have a clear place in the day. Children share stories with adults, spend time with friends in a comfortable book corner and borrow library books to read at home. This gives families a way to continue the enjoyment of stories beyond nursery.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here reaches beyond talking and listening. The federation aims to develop curiosity, independence, respect and the confidence to try unfamiliar things through play. Its approach includes helping children express feelings, understand others and solve problems. Children also explore the wider world through visits to local amenities and celebrations involving different cultures and faiths. These experiences connect nursery learning with people and places beyond the classroom.
Settling starts before the first nursery session: families have a home visit and children take part in play sessions. Those early contacts begin the relationship between home and nursery. In June 2025, relationships with staff helped children become settled and confident, while familiar routines supported their concentration.
Support responds to the individual child. Staff use observations of behaviour to recognise additional needs and provide help promptly with managing emotions or addressing gaps in learning. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and those learning English as an additional language, received support suited to them. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in June 2025.
Across the federation, individual focus weeks use observations of play and learning to follow children's development. Parent consultations bring families' views into decisions about next steps, giving parents a role in shaping the learning that follows.
Reception is a separate application. Attending Parklands does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Plan that application separately from the nursery place.
Term-time opening runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Government-funded early education places cover all three- and four-year-olds and some eligible two-year-olds; eligibility matters for the younger group.
