Climbing, balancing and pedalling give Spring Lane’s nursery a practical, active character. Jumping Jacks Nursery (Pre-School) sits within Spring Lane Primary School in Northampton, with a pre-school room for children aged 3 to 4. Indoor learning and outdoor activity both belong to the experience, so choosing this nursery means preparing for play beyond the classroom.
At the inspection on 15 and 16 November 2022, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play combines with focused teaching here. Children can join planned activities or choose their own, with access to learning spaces indoors and outside. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework: talking and listening, managing feelings and developing movement come alongside early literacy, number work, exploring the world and creative expression. This gives learning a broader purpose than preparing children to read.
Books and poems introduce written language, while counting, shapes and measures provide early mathematical experiences. Music, dance and role-play give children ways to express ideas; exploration of people, places and the environment helps them make sense of their surroundings. These are practical experiences as well as early skills.
Outdoor play includes climbing apparatus, with balancing and pedalling also part of the activity. Children go outside in all weathers. A waterproof coat and suitable shoes therefore serve a learning purpose, rather than simply keeping children comfortable between home and nursery.
Learning during play. In November 2022, nursery and pre-school children had worthwhile learning opportunities, but adults across early years did not consistently monitor children’s activity choices. Conversations during less structured play also needed to extend learning more effectively. For families, the important distinction is between having activities to choose from and receiving the adult guidance that helps a child learn through them.
Personal, social and emotional development was supported well in November 2022. That matters for children learning to manage feelings and form relationships alongside their classroom learning. The nursery lead also holds a safeguarding role, linking nursery leadership with responsibility for children’s protection.
An EYFS and Key Stage 1 SEND coordinator can be contacted through the school office. This gives families a direct route for discussing additional needs. Spring Lane also aims to work with parents and carers to develop children’s independence and enthusiasm for learning.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority where they live, following its normal application timetable. The route depends on the family’s home address, rather than the authority area containing the school. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions, and submit the latter by the deadline for the relevant entry year.
The nursery accepts 15 / 30 hour funding. To request a place, complete an application form and return it to the school office; families join a waiting list and are contacted when a space becomes available. Nursery tours can be arranged by contacting the nursery. General enquiries can go to office@springlaneprimaryschool.com or 01604 639114.
Royal blue knitwear and a white polo shirt form the uniform, with specified options for bottoms. Shoes should have buckles or Velcro; laces and open toes are excluded. Jewellery is not worn in nursery. Label clothing and pack spare clothes in a small, labelled backpack that your child recognises. Entrance pegs provide somewhere to keep the bag, making changes of clothing part of the practical preparation for an active session.
