Play, early conversation and leafy school grounds give St Peter's Preschool its character. This is the nursery provision within St Peter's School in Kettering, an independent school, for boys and girls aged three and four. The Preschool occupies one nursery class within the school, giving children a school setting while their learning remains centred on early childhood.
The day runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm, with lunch between 11.30am and 12.30pm. These are guideline times rather than a rigid timetable. Play provides the route into learning: children develop language, explore numbers and begin making marks and forming letters. In parent terms, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects these first learning steps with children's physical, emotional and social development.
At the ISI inspection of 24 to 26 February 2026, early-years provision combined carefully organised indoor and outdoor spaces with effective teaching through play. Adults develop children's vocabulary through conversation, while assessment helps them spot when extra support is needed. Children made good progress from their individual starting points.
Outdoor learning has concrete places to draw on. The school grounds include a kitchen garden, an orchard, the South Lawn and a wildlife pond, and outdoor activities extend across the year groups throughout the year. This gives learning beyond the classroom a physical setting. Guided play also develops the everyday skills of sharing, waiting for a turn and handling small disagreements.
Relationships matter alongside learning. In February 2026, early-years children had secure connections with familiar adults, who helped them become more independent and understand their emotions. Staffing ratios, supervision and safeguarding procedures were applied consistently. Staff worked with parents to recognise children's needs early and put additional help in place promptly, connecting support at school with families' knowledge of their child.
Food has its own daily routine. Preschool children receive a healthy snack each day. Nutritionists plan the meals, which are prepared away from the school and cooked on site; a vegetarian choice is included. Family-style dining creates time for conversation with adults and other children as well as practising table manners.
Dietary arrangements cover allergies, medical needs and religious requirements. Families should discuss these with the class teacher or school office and update allergy information when it changes. Wraparound care includes a light snack, so the extended day has a food provision too.
Preschool attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families should confirm the Reception application requirements with the school. Registration uses the school's online admissions platform, and applications are considered where places are available; an oversubscribed year group has a waiting list.
Becoming familiar with school life and obtaining Reception admission are separate matters. Choose the Preschool for the nursery day itself.
Wraparound care extends the available day from 8am to 5.45pm. It is charged by the half-hour session, including part sessions. Early and Late Clubs do not require advance booking, although Late Club can be booked ahead or requested by calling the office before the school day ends.
Under the former Sunnylands Nursery arrangements, universal funding provided up to 15 hours each week from the term after a child's third birthday, restricted to three hours daily, Monday to Friday, from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Registration and attendance on the term's headcount date were required. Funded-only bookings required five afternoons each week and a daily consumables charge. Extended 30-hour places were limited, subject to availability and for children attending at least 30 hours weekly. Confirm current Preschool funding and booking conditions with the school. Preschool places are excluded from school bursaries.
For enquiries or a visit, telephone 01536 512066 or email STPSOffice@st-peters.org.uk. Visits to see the Preschool during the academic year can be arranged through the office. Refer to the school for current charges before committing to a booking.
