At the March 2023 inspection, language, shopping and library visits gave Thorplands’ early years provision a practical focus: children developed communication alongside experiences beyond the classroom. This is the nursery provision within Thorplands Primary School in Northampton, with pre-school entry from the term following a child’s third birthday.
At the Ofsted inspection on 7 and 8 March 2023, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Communication is a clear thread through early learning. In March 2023, teaching in the early years concentrated on language and communication, preparing children for their next stage. For parents, the emphasis is on children developing the language they need to express themselves and take part in learning.
Shopping trips and visits to the local library also formed part of early years experiences in March 2023. These give learning a setting beyond school: shops and a library bring children into contact with everyday places in their neighbourhood.
For a family raising concerns about their child, the class teacher is the first contact. A school SEND coordinator provides another route for discussing special educational needs and disabilities. This gives parents a starting point for conversations about support.
Individual Learning Plans and One-Page Profiles address physical access to learning, with families and professionals involved in ongoing reviews. Support can therefore be discussed around the individual child’s needs rather than treated as a single arrangement for everyone.
Physical access has concrete features across the school: classroom entrances and exits are flat, corridors accommodate wheelchairs, and a disabled toilet sits opposite the hall through the main office. These arrangements matter for families whose children need accessible facilities.
Separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a fresh application through their home local authority, even if their chosen school is in another authority’s area.
No nursery priority for 2026–27. The oversubscription criteria for that intake did not give nursery attendance priority. They prioritised children in care and previously in care, followed by siblings, staff children, children living nearer to Thorplands than another equivalent state school, and other applicants. Familiarity with the school does not replace the admissions process.
For September 2026 entry, applications closed at midnight on 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed; it belongs to that intake and should not be treated as the deadline for a later Reception application.

Handover is explicit: staff responsibility begins when a child is passed into their care and continues until collection by a responsible person. For nursery families, that makes direct handover to staff and adult collection the practical bookends of the day.
Children can start in the term after they turn three.
Early years provision was judged Good at the school inspection on 7 and 8 March 2023. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
No. Families apply separately through their home local authority. Nursery attendance was not a priority criterion for the 2026–27 intake.
The class teacher is the first contact for concerns. Parents can also contact the school’s SEND coordinator through the contact route.
