At a Glance

Choosing the resources, getting messy and trying a manageable risk give Wallace Road its character. Children can select where to play in an open, accessible environment. The nursery says it deliberately limits the resources on offer, favouring materials that children can use in different ways. Choice shapes the day.

Wallace Road is a maintained nursery school in Northampton, with its own headteacher and governing body, rather than a nursery class within a primary school. It welcomes children aged 3 and 4. Its aims include helping children feel valued and become curious, confident learners, with relationships and individual interests shaping the approach.

The Nursery Day

Play provides the starting point for teaching. Tower building, water play and stories give adults opportunities to introduce ideas and challenges linked to children's interests. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum concerns early learning and development; here, the emphasis on play connects that learning to activities children choose. Threading, drawing on a large scale and using scissors add practical detail to the day.

An accessible environment lets children select resources for themselves, while outdoor space gives them room to explore physically. At the June 2022 inspection, children sustained their attention, persisted with bead threading and developed confidence through activities such as taking a tricycle down a slope or practising on a scooter alongside an adult. These examples show how small challenges can build independence, rather than adults simply completing a task for a child.

There were also clear areas for improvement in June 2022: parts of the curriculum, including understanding the world, needed greater precision; opportunities to extend vocabulary and correct misunderstandings were missed; and children needed more chances to learn about different cultures in modern Britain. For families, the important distinction is between engaging play and adults consistently helping children take their learning further.

Care and Support

A key person is allocated before a child starts. This gives both parent and child a main contact who explains the nursery routines, discusses questions and learns about the child's communication and sensitivities. Support for settling was evident in June 2022, with children who needed extra help gaining confidence to participate.

Class Dojo carries photographs and observations and lets parents message their child's keyworker. Support for children learning English uses gestures, pictures and simple language. Toilet training is not an entry requirement: staff work with families at the child's stage of development. These arrangements make everyday care part of the partnership with parents.

Milk or water accompanies fruit and vegetable snacks; children staying all day bring a healthy packed lunch. The team includes a senior practitioner who also holds family support and safeguarding responsibilities. Other staff working with children have level 3 or other relevant qualifications. In June 2022, children with SEND were engaged in learning, and safeguarding arrangements were effective, with staff recognising concerns and leaders pursuing help from external agencies.

Moving On to Reception

Attendance at Wallace Road does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and choosing a primary school as separate decisions.

In June 2022, staff passed welfare information to children's next schools so that support could continue. That continuity concerns a child's care; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Full days run from 8:45am to 3:30pm. The nursery favours daily three-hour attendance for continuity. The 15 funded hours begin in the term after a child's third birthday; some families qualify for 30 hours.

For eligible families, one arrangement combines four full days with one morning or afternoon session, totalling 30 hours with no additional charges. A five-day arrangement totals 33.75 hours and carries an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges. Oscars Club, based at Kingsley Primary School, provides before and after nursery care and can bring children to nursery and collect them afterwards.

Enquiries lead to a show round, followed by an application form returned to reception. Call 01604 713422 to enquire. Send clothes suitable for messy play, a bag of changes and, where needed, nappies and wipes.
