Mud, sound games and imaginative investigations give this nursery its character. West Haddon Endowed Church of England Primary School has an on-site nursery on The Green in West Haddon, operating during school terms. Provision includes children aged two. It is part of a Church of England school that describes Christian values as central to its work, giving families a faith-based school context from the outset.
Play shapes the learning. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with activities organised around children and their development. In practical terms, that means opportunities to investigate materials, develop language and practise the skills needed for later learning. The early-years outdoor area remains available in every season and in all weathers. Paint and mud, alongside water and sand, make exploration hands-on. Mess is part of the process.
Daily nursery phonics starts with Phase One of Letters and Sounds. Children explore sounds made by voices, instruments and their surroundings, alongside rhyme and body percussion. Activities progress towards hearing how sounds combine into words and separating them again, before moving to Nursery Read Write Inc. This gives early reading a foundation in listening and speaking.
Jigsaw brings personal, social and health education into the nursery, with weekly sessions and a soft toy companion. Topics include Healthy Me and Celebrating Differences, giving children ways to discuss wellbeing and relationships.
In December 2024, inspectors found that early-years learning combined adult planning with children's spontaneous interests. Nursery children used binoculars to investigate whether a dinosaur had toppled a nearby tree. That example shows how an unexpected observation can become an imaginative learning activity.
A nursery manager and nursery assistant form part of the staffing structure. There is also a member of the nursery team trained as a safeguarding lead, giving parents a nursery-based person to approach with concerns.
At school level, support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) includes access to Educational Psychology and Behaviour Support where necessary. Parents contribute their views and permission before referrals to outside agencies, and participate in reviews of individual education plans. That makes family involvement part of planning support, rather than simply receiving an update afterwards.
ParentPay supports school communication and payments, while school news is shared each Friday. Separately, the December 2024 inspection identified a school-wide need to develop teaching about British values so that pupils understand them at an appropriate depth for their age. This was a school-wide improvement point.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admission priority. Families must make a separate application through West Northants Council's online primary admissions route. The application period usually begins in October and ends at the beginning of January for entry the following September. Keep that application separate from nursery arrangements.
Transition activities serve a different purpose. The incoming Reception cohort can spend sessions at school during the summer term before starting in September. These opportunities help children become familiar with school; they do not alter how places are allocated.
The nursery operates during school terms. For nursery applications, contact the school office on 01788 510318. The office can also be reached at office@westhaddon.northants.sch.uk, and the school has an online enquiry form. These give families direct routes to begin an application or discuss their child's needs.
