Practising new words during play gives Woodvale’s early years provision its clearest character. Adults help children use mathematical language during activities, turning learning into something children can try for themselves. The nursery takes children aged 3–4, starting in the term following their third birthday, and forms part of Woodvale Primary Academy in Northampton.
At the Ofsted inspection on 13 and 14 December 2023, early years provision was graded Good within the school inspection. That judgement covers the early years phase rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Practice is an important part of the day. In December 2023, early years activities gave children opportunities to revisit their learning, with adults encouraging them to use words for comparing quantities during play. This makes the connection between an adult’s explanation and a child’s own activity concrete.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach to understanding the world includes exploring children’s own past experiences. Children also compare people from stories, including figures from history. Familiar memories and story characters give young children a starting point for talking about the past, rather than beginning with distant events.
Art adds another way to express ideas. Artistic learning begins in Nursery, and Woodvale uses Kapow to support its art teaching. Children explore materials and respond to experiences through visual and tactile work, giving expression a practical form alongside conversation.
Curriculum continuity. In December 2023, some subject plans lacked sufficiently precise learning steps, including the way early years foundations connected with later learning. Checks on retained knowledge also needed extending across subjects. These concerns matter alongside the positive findings about early years activities: practising a skill and planning how it develops are both necessary.
Established early years routines helped children become comfortable quickly in December 2023. Familiar patterns therefore supported the move into nursery life, alongside activities that let children practise learning with adult help.
For additional needs, the school’s support structure brings together the class teacher and Inclusion Lead. Parents can begin by requesting a conversation with the teacher; further discussion with the Inclusion Lead can follow. The school works with educational psychologists and speech and language therapists, providing routes to specialist advice when needed.
Accessibility has a concrete physical basis: the school occupies a single level, with parking for blue badge holders. A family support worker also supports children and families. These are school-wide arrangements relevant to discussing a nursery child’s needs before joining.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application online via the West Northants Council (WNC) School Admissions Team in the year before entry. Choosing nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
Transition support is a different matter. Children joining Reception are invited to meet staff with their parents or carers. Where required, staff can visit a child’s existing setting to discuss their needs. Those conversations support preparation; they do not secure admission.
For children entitled to 15 hours of free childcare, sessions run from 9.00am to 12.00pm or from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Those entitled to 30 hours can attend the all-day session, 9.00am to 3.30pm. Claiming the 30-hour entitlement requires an application through the government childcare route.
Nursery application forms can be requested from the academy office or by calling 01604 493771. General enquiries can also go to admin@woodvaleprimaryacademy.org. Visits to the academy can be arranged, giving families an opportunity to discuss joining.
