Bikes, water play and a book corner give Comberbach’s nursery its practical, playful character. This is the nursery provision within Comberbach Nursery and Primary School on Mather Drive, serving two- and three-year-olds. Children can choose their own activities as well as join adults for guided learning, so independence has a place alongside shared tasks.
Play carries the learning here. Indoors, children can paint, make pictures with scissors and glue, explore pretend play or spend time with books. Outside, sand and water sit alongside bikes and cars. These give children different ways to explore: making something, moving around or concentrating on a story.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework. In parent terms, its starting points are learning to communicate, developing physical skills and managing feelings and relationships. Mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world broaden that learning. Activities are planned around children’s development, needs and interests, rather than treating everyone as ready for the same task.
Choice is part of the approach. Children work independently and are encouraged to stay with projects, while teachers and nursery nurses also lead activities. Sharing, taking turns and doing things for themselves are explicit priorities. That gives everyday play a social purpose as well as a learning one. Phonics also forms part of early reading and writing work.
Parents are encouraged to take an active part in their child’s learning. For families whose child has special educational needs or disabilities, the school welcomes direct discussion and visits to talk through support. Cheshire West’s Live Well service and Local Offer provide a further route to information about local services.
Lunch needs planning alongside sessions. Families provide a healthy packed lunch, with school meals available to purchase as an alternative. Dolce supplies the school’s meals, and School Grid handles advance ordering. Parents also supply nappies, wipes and suncream when their child needs them, making these practical preparations part of getting ready for nursery.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, rather than treating a nursery booking as a school-place application.
For September 2026 entry, applications went through Cheshire West and Chester’s website, with a closing date of 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. The school’s Reception admissions are handled by Weaver Trust Admissions; this is a separate process from arranging nursery sessions.
Term-time funded provision covers 15 or 30 hours a week across 38 weeks for eligible families. Funding for three- and four-year-olds starts in the term following the third birthday; some families also qualify for funding for two-year-olds. Parents are responsible for obtaining their funding code, with help offered by the school office.
There are morning, afternoon and all-day sessions. The funded all-day pattern runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm, while afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Additional term-time sessions can be bought, and partially funded days carry a proportionate charge. Lunchtime supervision is charged separately. Ask the school for current charges.
Before submitting nursery forms, telephone 01606 891336 to check space on the days you need. Completed forms can go to admin@comberbach.cheshire.sch.uk or be handed to the office. The office also arranges school tours. Parents receive advance contact about occasional trips during the academic year.
