At the April 2023 inspection, nursery rhymes, books shared with adults and reading buddies gave Hartford Manor’s nursery a clear introduction to school life. The provision belongs to Hartford Manor Primary School & Nursery on Stones Manor Lane in Hartford, Northwich. It sits within a primary school whose age range begins at three.
The early years judgement deserves attention. Ofsted rated early years Requires improvement following its inspection on 18 and 19 April 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the central consideration is the breadth of learning alongside the positive start in reading.
Books and singing provide concrete starting points for the nursery day. In April 2023, nursery children sang familiar rhymes and explored books alongside adults. Older children also read to the early years children as reading buddies. These are opportunities to experience stories with both staff and other pupils, making reading a shared activity within the school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, sets expectations for learning, development and children’s welfare up to age five. Its learning areas extend beyond reading and number work to include language, movement, relationships, creativity and understanding the world. That breadth matters here: in April 2023, early reading was a strength, and writing and mathematics had received careful planning, but the remaining learning areas had received less attention. Children consequently lacked some of the knowledge needed for later learning. The required improvement was to organise learning coherently across the whole early years curriculum.
Woodland and substantial open areas form part of the wider school site, where nature supports learning. These give the school a distinctive physical setting; they should be understood as school grounds rather than a description of a dedicated nursery garden.
Settling was a positive feature in April 2023: early years children were happy and adjusted well to the setting. Their behaviour was also positive in teaching time and across the grounds. For a child beginning school life, those findings offer reassurance about the experience of joining the group, while remaining separate from the curriculum concerns.
For families with concerns about development, the school’s SEND information provides a starting point for discussing support. It directs parents to the West Cheshire Local Offer for local services and includes a School SEND Report. This gives families routes to information about school procedures and support beyond the setting.
Attending Hartford Manor’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions: familiarity with Hartford Manor must not be mistaken for an allocated place.
The nursery timetable starts at 8:40am and finishes at 3:10pm. Those times give parents a concrete basis for planning collection and the journey to school.
