Aprons on before water play: that small detail captures the independence taking shape in Butterflies, Wincham Community Primary School’s nursery provision. In November 2023, nursery children were already managing this preparation readily, making practical routines part of their play. The emphasis is on learning how to participate as well as what to learn.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 8 and 9 November 2023. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. Butterflies has its own class page and a class email address, giving families a direct point of contact for their child’s learning.
Water play provides a concrete glimpse of the nursery day. Children’s readiness to put on aprons in November 2023 showed that they understood the preparation an activity required. These small acts of independence matter: children can take part rather than wait for an adult to organise every step.
Across early years at that time, children paid close attention and changed activities smoothly. Adults used skilful conversation to develop children’s language and communication. For parents, this gives substance to the early years foundation stage: learning includes talking with adults, listening and becoming familiar with routines, alongside play.
The curriculum’s sequence began in early years, with learning organised to build across successive years. Social understanding also had a practical expression. In November 2023, early years children were observed collecting coins during play with the intention of helping homeless people. That example links imaginative activity with thinking about someone else’s needs.
Settling was a strength in November 2023. Early years children became confident in the setting and quickly understood its expectations, while nursery children’s behaviour was exceptionally positive. For a child starting group provision, familiarity with routines can make participation easier.
Additional needs were identified promptly and accurately when children entered early years. Staff adapted their approaches to help children with special educational needs and/or disabilities access learning. The useful point for families is the connection between recognising a need early and adjusting how a child takes part.
For day-to-day communication, the Butterflies class address is butterflies@winchamcp.cheshire.sch.uk. Teachers check class emails briefly before school when working on site, but parents should not expect a reply before lessons begin. Issues may be dealt with directly rather than through an email response; the team contacts families when feedback is needed.
Reception admission is separate. Attending Butterflies does not guarantee a place in Wincham’s Reception. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing a nursery place and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
