Wellies on the peg and a book chosen for home give Witton Church Walk Nursery its practical, playful character. Outdoor exploration and shared reading are part of the nursery experience, with children able to exchange their home book daily. That gives families a simple way to carry learning beyond the classroom.
This is the nursery within Witton Church Walk CofE Aided Nursery and Primary School on Church Walk in Northwich. Places for two-year-olds have been offered since September 2026. The Christian character reaches into early learning: in January 2025, children were learning about peace and love. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025; that judgement covers early years rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Write Dance and Dough Disco sit alongside Yoga, baking and Forest Fun among the activities children may take part in. Learning takes place outdoors as well as in the classroom. The outside area gets plenty of use, so waterproof clothing and wellies have a purpose beyond the occasional outing.
Singing, storytelling, imaginative role play and small-world play also feature in the team's account of nursery life. Children can explore ideas through stories and pretend situations, while crafts and baking add practical activities. Choosing a book to take home gives children a say in what the family reads together.
The early years curriculum includes Personal, Social, Emotional Development, alongside Communication and Language and Understanding the World. In parent terms, learning includes relationships and feelings as well as talking and exploring the world. In January 2025, early reading was a strength, supported by staff trained in phonics. Movement activities were especially effective in developing children's physical skills and core strength.
Early writing. In January 2025, activities and writing materials were not consistently helping children develop secure writing skills. Inspectors also called for stronger checks on children's early years learning and for later curriculum planning to take better account of what children had already learned. These are substantive considerations alongside the positive findings about reading and physical development.
Speech and language support has a specific place in the early years team. A teaching assistant has training in this area, with difficulties addressed within school or referred to the Speech and Language therapy service. This provides a route from recognising a concern to seeking specialist help.
For parents with concerns about additional needs, the class teacher is the first contact; the SENCO can then advise. The school's accessibility arrangements include classroom hearing loops, a lift between its two levels and accessible toilets on both levels.
Before admission, introductions for children and parents can be arranged following discussion. Separately, the school's joining arrangements allow transition visits for children who are anxious once their place is confirmed. Nursery updates are shared through the Instagram account wittonchurchwalknursery, giving families another connection with classroom activities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The nursery application form is on the admissions page. Guided school tours can be arranged by telephone, allowing parents to see the provision before applying. Contact the school office on 01606 663610 to arrange an appointment.
For outdoor activities, children need wellies kept on their peg and a warm, waterproof coat. Those everyday preparations support participation in the nursery's outdoor learning.
