Nursery at St Martin's School

At a Glance

Cameras, microphones and number blocks give the early years at St Martin's a practical character: children investigate how things work and learn through play. For parents choosing its nursery, that is a useful picture of learning beyond a desk.

The nursery caters for boys aged three and four within St Martin's independent school in Northwood. At the January 2025 ISI inspection, the early years included two Nursery classes and an early start class. These form part of the school's early years provision, rather than a separately graded nursery.

The Nursery Day

The nursery timetable gives arrival as 08:50, registration at 09:00 and the end of the main day at 15:00. That provides a clear daily framework, with care available before and afterwards.

Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), learning combines practical exploration, communication and physical activity. In January 2025, leaders tracked children's development and used their interests and needs to shape the curriculum. The discovery area supplied a concrete example: children explored the workings of cameras and microphones. Curiosity had something tangible to work on.

Number learning also took a practical form. Children matched blocks with numbered cards as maths detectives, connecting a written number with a quantity they could handle. Language development began in the early years too, with vocabulary and communication receiving attention. Together, these activities give parents examples of how play supports learning.

Outdoor experiences add another dimension. The nature area gave early years children opportunities to investigate their surroundings, alongside planned activities developing physical skills. A swimming programme adapted to children supported physical development and confidence. Learning to share also featured in bus role play, where taking turns had an immediate purpose.

Care and Support

Established routines helped early years children play and explore independently in January 2025. Adults modelled considerate interactions, and children engaged happily with staff and one another. During the same inspection, ISI found uneven behaviour management across younger classes, reducing some pupils' concentration and progress. This finding concerned younger pupils generally; the report did not identify Nursery classes specifically. Early years staff held paediatric first-aid training, a concrete part of the care arrangements.

Parents received reading and language resources to use at home, alongside written progress reports and meetings. This gives families ways to support vocabulary development and discuss how their child is getting on.

Food is built into the fee structure: a cooked lunch is included, although lunch appears separately on invoices. Breakfast Club provides cereal, toast, yogurt and fruit alongside a hot choice; Friday includes a cooked breakfast. Late Stay has an optional hot or cold tea for an additional charge, so the meal arrangements depend on how long a child stays.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application, following the relevant admissions route and deadline rather than assuming that a nursery place settles the next stage.

Practical Information

Full-time nursery attendance is the basis of the fees. Families wanting to begin with fewer sessions can discuss that arrangement with the Admissions team. This makes the starting pattern a practical decision to address before joining.

Attendance between 08:00 and 17:00 is included in the fees. Breakfast Club runs from 07:30 to 08:00, while Late Stay covers 17:00 to 18:00; both have separate charges. Contact the school for current charges when planning a longer day.

Eligible three- and four-year-olds can use up to 15 funded hours from the term after their third birthday. Funding is accepted during term time within the nursery's 08:00 to 16:00 opening window and deducted from the termly bill. This is a contribution towards fees, so families should consider the remaining charges alongside their attendance pattern.

Private tours can be booked through the online form or by calling 01923 825740. The school is at 40 Moor Park Road, Northwood, HA6 2DJ.
