New words, letter sounds and crops grown in the allotments give Welbeck’s nursery provision a distinctive combination of language and practical learning. The nursery belongs to Welbeck Primary School in the Meadows, Nottingham, on Kinglake Place. Its identity is rooted in the youngest children’s learning, rather than simply preparing families for school admission.
At the Ofsted inspection on 1 and 2 March 2022, early years provision was judged Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating. Nursery children were attentive and curious, with a developing understanding of the sounds represented by letters.
Language gives the learning a clear focus. In March 2022, children in the early years were rapidly extending their vocabulary, including finding alternative words to describe a small character in a story. This is a concrete example of learning through talk: children work with the meaning of words, rather than just hearing a story read aloud.
Letter sounds sit alongside that vocabulary work. Nursery children were quick to understand these sounds and listened with care. For parents, the combination matters: attention, spoken language and early reading skills are being developed together. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) learning illustrated here combines these language activities with practical experiences outdoors.
The allotments provide a physical setting for that practical learning. From EYFS onwards, children learn about planting and harvesting with teachers and the gardener, as well as recognising plants and learning their names. Fruit and vegetables make this learning tangible. Children can connect a new word with a plant and the process of growing it, giving the language work another concrete context.
Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) begins in the early years. In March 2022, staff held ambitious expectations for these children and understood how to help them learn the important knowledge their peers were learning. The emphasis was on access to learning, with help directed towards what children needed to understand.
For families raising a SEND query, the school SENCo can be contacted through the office. This gives parents a direct route to the role responsible for coordinating special educational needs support. The school also aims to build lasting relationships with individual children and regards parental involvement as part of supporting their progress.
Attending Welbeck’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions: familiarity with the school does not itself secure the next place.
