Storytelling gives Acorn Class its character. Gobowen Primary School’s nursery children tell tales and nursery rhymes aloud with text maps, making spoken language a concrete part of their learning. This is the school’s own nursery provision, within a primary school taking children from age three, on School Lane in Gobowen.
Acorn has its own class identity within the school. The wider campus includes a library, Forest Lodge, woodland area and vegetable patch. These are school facilities; their presence gives families a useful picture of the surrounding setting rather than a promise about each nursery session.
Language runs through the early years curriculum. Talk4Writing uses visual text maps to help nursery children recount stories and rhymes, giving them a structure for putting ideas into words. Familiar songs and percussion instruments also feature in early years music lessons. Children practise using their voices and making sounds, alongside their storytelling.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the curriculum framework here. Its practical learning includes early reading and mathematical language. Read, Write Inc. is used across the early years classes, with daily teaching in small groups led by staff trained in the programme. Assessment determines the groups, and children can change groups as their knowledge develops. That makes grouping responsive to what a child currently knows.
In July 2024, Ofsted identified an emphasis on early years vocabulary, including language describing position, and an enjoyment of books beginning in Nursery. Understanding where something sits in relation to something else builds a foundation for mathematics. The same inspection described support for children falling behind in early years phonics, helping them continue developing their reading.
For families discussing additional needs, the school has a teacher responsible for SEND and offers appointments with that member of staff. This provides a direct route for a conversation about a child’s needs. All school staff have completed Child Protection and Prevent training, while designated staff hold further child protection accreditation.
Care procedures include a school first aid room. Nearly all teaching assistants have first aid training, and most hold paediatric first aid qualifications. Injuries are logged; a head bump prompts a letter home for every child, with a telephone call in some circumstances. If sickness or diarrhoea occurs at school, children are sent home and should remain away until 48 hours after the last episode. Families need emergency contacts who can be reached for collection.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat that application as a separate task when planning the next stage.
Shropshire Council is the school’s admissions authority. Acorn membership and the Reception application should therefore remain distinct in a family’s plans: choosing the nursery is a decision about the child’s nursery experience, rather than an assurance of a later school place.
The nursery opens at 08:30 and finishes at 15:00. Its lunch period runs from 11:30 to 12:00, providing a clear midday marker within those opening hours. The nursery finishes before the older school classes, an important distinction when arranging collection.
