Nursery at Kinnerley Church of England Primary School and Nursery

Owlets puts nursery children alongside Reception in a shared class, with indoor exploration, outdoor learning and a sound-based introduction to reading. Kinnerley’s nursery starts from age 2 and forms part of its Church of England primary school. A class teacher and nursery lead teaching assistant work with this youngest group, giving the provision a clear place within the school’s teaching structure.
Christian values shape the school’s aims: courage, community, kindness and thankfulness. For families, the defining practical feature is the shared Nursery and Reception class. Children already belong to that classroom community during their nursery years, although this arrangement does not secure their next school place.
Listening comes before reading words. Nursery children explore sounds through instruments, their own voices, environmental noises and shakers containing different objects. These are concrete ways to practise hearing differences between sounds. Familiar rhymes and storytelling also feature in early English learning, while children make marks and explain what those marks mean. The emphasis connects talking, listening and the beginnings of writing.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning takes place indoors and outside. In art, children have both activities guided by adults and opportunities to follow their own ideas through play. This gives creative exploration more than one starting point: an adult can introduce an activity, or a child can initiate it.
Technology has a specific place too. Early-years children can use BeeBots, laptops and iPads, and learn to choose technology for a purpose, such as recording an important event. Understanding the world includes looking at familiar things from the past and present, including homes and toys. Dinosaurs, pirates and lifecycles provide other starting points for exploring change and time. These examples make the curriculum tangible rather than a list of school subjects.
Seesaw brings the classroom day home through videos and photographs, alongside updates about activities and learning themes. Parents are encouraged to talk with the class teacher and build on learning through stories, number play and mark making. Sessions about teaching phonics and reading offer another way for families to participate.
For additional needs, the school’s SENDCo works with teachers and the emotional literacy, intervention and mental health lead. The team involves parents and outside agencies in support for individual children. That gives families a route for discussing learning, communication, emotional or physical needs within the school’s support structure.
At school lunchtime, choices include a meal served hot, a supplied packed lunch or food brought from home. The Corbet School (Aspen’s Catering) supplies the meals. Vegetarian options are offered, and dietary needs or allergies can be accommodated through discussion with the office. Families bringing food are asked to exclude nuts because children at school have severe nut allergies.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee admission to Kinnerley’s Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step, even though Owlets combines the two age groups.
Sharing a class gives nursery children familiarity with the Nursery and Reception setting. That classroom continuity is separate from the allocation of a Reception place.
Nursery availability extends from 8:45am to 3:15pm every day, an arrangement introduced in September 2020. Meal orders have their own planning requirement: use the Parent App by 9am on the Friday before the following week. Same-day orders are not accepted. Contact the school for current meal charges.
The school is on School Road in Kinnerley, postcode SY10 8DF. To arrange a visit, telephone the office on 01691 682289; a senior staff member can show families around. This is a useful opportunity to see the Owlets setting and discuss your child’s needs before joining.
