At a Glance

Play gives Weston Rhyn’s nursery its character: exploration, discovery and growing independence are the school’s stated priorities for early learning. This is a 26-place nursery for children aged two to four, housed in the school’s EYFS building alongside a Reception class. It gives the youngest children a distinct base within the wider primary school.

Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection of 14 and 15 November 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, brings care and learning together. Its seven learning areas cover language and communication, movement, emotional and social development, early reading and writing, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means development is broader than learning letters: talking, moving and managing relationships also belong in the nursery curriculum.

Play is the school’s chosen starting point. The nursery aims to build on the experiences children bring from home, encouraging them to investigate and become more independent. In November 2023, early years children combined potion-making with puppet storytelling, cooperating with one another and maintaining concentration during independent activities. Those examples connect imaginative play with communication and learning to work together.

There is also a structured element. Nursery children have daily whole-class phonics, using Read, Write Inc. guidance. The school aims to link letters and sounds with speaking, listening, reading and writing. Daily phonics gives early literacy a regular place in the nursery day.

The EYFS building has two classrooms. Across the school site are a field, two playgrounds and a forest school area; quiet spaces are also available throughout the school. These describe the wider setting around the nursery, rather than a separate nursery-only outdoor area.

Care and Support

Home and nursery are intended to work closely together. The early years team shares both difficulties and achievements with parents, so conversations can address support as well as celebrate progress.

For children with additional needs, the school works with families to understand individual circumstances. Its SEND provision covers communication, learning, emotional needs and physical or sensory needs. That makes the family’s knowledge of their child part of planning support.

Food is prepared daily in the school’s own kitchen, with children’s preferences shaping meal choices. School lunch arrangements also allow packed lunches. Lunchtime supervision includes qualified first aiders, placing practical care alongside the meal itself.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Shropshire Council is the school’s admissions authority. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions, even though both classes occupy the EYFS building.

Practical Information

Nursery applications go through the school office. Prospective parents are welcome to visit the school, providing an opportunity to see the setting before choosing it.

The school is on Old Chirk Road in Weston Rhyn, SY10 7SR. Contact the office on 01691 773429 or email admin@westonrhyn.shropshire.sch.uk for a nursery enquiry or to arrange a visit.
