Adult-guided learning and room to pursue an idea shape Woodside’s nursery provision in Oswestry. Part of Woodside Primary School on Gittin Street, it combines indoor and outdoor learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The school aims for children to develop independence, confidence and the ability to reflect on their learning. Play has a clear purpose here.
The day balances activities directed by adults with play that children initiate themselves. Alongside focused teaching, children have time to investigate and try out their learning in the indoor and outdoor environments. This gives them opportunities both to follow guidance and to make choices about their own exploration.
EYFS learning covers seven areas. Language, physical development and children’s social and emotional development sit alongside mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent terms, the curriculum brings together learning to communicate, move, manage feelings and build knowledge. It reaches beyond early reading and number work.
White Rose Maths is used in the early years, alongside Development Matters and the statutory EYFS framework. Nursery staff also work with subject teams on curriculum planning, connecting the youngest children’s learning with the school’s wider teaching sequence.
Communication receives deliberate attention. In October 2024, Ofsted found that the early-years emphasis on language and communication prepared children well for later learning. The learning environments and adult interactions are planned to give children opportunities to develop language, build relationships and practise both larger movements and finer physical skills. Adults model constructive interactions and language, giving children examples to use as they learn to play together.
Emotional development is part of the learning approach. Woodside aims to help children regain calm when feelings become difficult, with opportunities to discuss emotions and understand them. For a young child, that makes managing feelings part of the day rather than a separate lesson.
Children in the early years settled quickly because of the care they received at the October 2024 inspection. That is a useful finding for families considering the first move into a school setting.
For discussions about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), parents can contact the school’s SENCo team through sen@woodside.shropshire.sch.uk. Parents can also give feedback by telephone, email or through conversations with senior staff before and after school.
Attending Woodside’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process by the normal deadline. Shropshire Local Authority manages the school’s admissions arrangements on its behalf.
Nursery and Reception staff collaborate with subject teams on curriculum planning. This provides a connection between stages of learning; it does not secure an admission offer. Keep the educational connection and the application process separate when planning ahead.
Families can request a nursery tour, a school tour or both using the tour request form. The school then contacts them to arrange a date. A nursery-focused visit offers a useful way to see the learning spaces described above.
