Nursery at Froxfield Church of England Primary and Pre-School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Child-chosen play and time outdoors give Froxfield’s pre-school its shape. Children can join after their second birthday, and the provision serves two to four-year-olds within the primary school. There are 20 children in the pre-school; that is a roll figure, rather than a number of places offered.

The school grounds provide space for learning and play, while the early-years classroom and outdoor areas support activities across the curriculum. For a young child, the emphasis is on exploring, talking and building relationships alongside more structured learning.

The Nursery Day

Choice has a place in the daily routine. Children start activities themselves, with adults helping them develop their ideas; group work and sessions involving the whole class provide a different rhythm. This gives children opportunities both to pursue an interest and to take part in something organised by an adult.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning with development and care. Language and communication, emotional and social development, and physical skills come first. In parent terms, that means learning to express needs, build relationships and use the body with increasing confidence. These foundations also support later work with numbers, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world.

Learning extends beyond the classroom into the outside areas. Both spaces support the early-years curriculum, rather than outdoor time being treated solely as a break from learning. Froxfield aims for children to become confident and resilient, with opportunities to explore and make choices for themselves.

In January 2024, pre-school children took an active part in activities guided by adults as well as play they chose themselves. That balance matters: joining a group and directing your own play are both part of becoming ready for the next stage.

Care and Support

Settling begins gradually. Accompanied visits usually become longer over time, giving children a bridge between home and pre-school. The process also allows a child to begin building a relationship with their key person, rather than expecting an immediate adjustment to unfamiliar routines.

In January 2024, children adapted promptly to pre-school routines with staff support. The practical settling arrangements give that finding useful context: familiarity is built over a series of visits.

Across Froxfield, staff watch for signs that a child may need additional help. Parents are consulted when support is considered and kept informed about progress. Possible help includes an individual learning programme, speech therapy advice or assessment, and input from the County’s Educational Psychology Service when school resources cannot meet a child’s learning difficulties.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application. Attending Froxfield’s pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process; Hampshire Admissions is the school’s signposted route for Year R. Treat choosing the pre-school and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Transition support is a different matter. Once a school place has been offered, children are invited to summer-term visits to meet their teacher and other children. The Reception teacher and Early Years Assistant also visit children at nursery. These arrangements help build familiarity; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Pre-school applications go directly to Froxfield. Families are welcome to visit, and enquiries can be sent to adminoffice@froxfield.hants.sch.uk. Children may start any time after turning two, so entry is not restricted to a single annual intake.
