A ground-floor classroom in a Victorian stone building puts Rosedale Abbey’s youngest children alongside the school’s early primary years. Nursery forms part of Rosedale Abbey Community Primary School, with early years and Key Stage 1 sharing Class 1. Cloakrooms and the school office are on the same floor, giving families a concrete picture of where nursery sits within the building.
In February 2024, early-years children showed confidence and independence, and teachers helped them resolve disagreements. Those are useful qualities for children beginning to learn alongside others.
Class 1 brings early years together with older children in a mixed-age setting. Teachers and teaching assistants use their knowledge of individual children’s learning to plan what comes next. In February 2024, this included building on what early-years children already understood, so teaching was responsive to their starting points.
My Happy Mind begins in nursery. It gives emotional and social learning a named place in the programme. Within Class 1’s support provision, Finger Gym, Write Dance and speech and language interventions are among the activities used. These are targeted supports rather than a timetable promised to every nursery child.
Curriculum clarity. The February 2024 inspection also identified insufficient precision about the knowledge children should learn in some subjects. This was a school-wide concern in a curriculum discussion that included early years, and it matters when assessing how clearly learning builds from one stage to another.
Support for additional needs starts with the class teacher and SEND coordinator. Parents help shape support plans, with reviews at least once each term. Practical adaptations can include visual timetables, ear defenders and sensory movement breaks, giving staff specific ways to adjust activities and the learning environment.
For children with SEND joining the school, staff can speak with their previous setting and arrange an individual transition plan where needed. Some children also have a familiar staff member who checks in during the day. This is additional emotional support, rather than a claim that every nursery child has that arrangement.
Meals are cooked daily in a school kitchen. Meat and poultry come from regional suppliers, while fruit and vegetables are sourced regionally where possible. The school follows a healthy-eating policy, making food preparation part of the wider care picture.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority within the school’s admission criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through North Yorkshire’s school admissions route by the normal deadline. Choosing nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
For children with SEND changing classes, staff pass information and support plans to the next teacher. A Social Story or book can be prepared if it helps the child understand the change. That supports familiarity with the next stage; it does not alter admission rights.
The school day runs from 9am to 3.30pm, with gates opening at 8:45am; these are school-wide timings. Lunchtime for all children is 12pm to 1pm.
