Stories, songs and talk give Bidston Village's early years provision its character. Language development begins in Nursery, with adults helping children build the vocabulary they need to join in and learn. This is provision within the primary school: Sunflowers serves eligible two-year-olds, while Foundation Stage 1 (F1) is the nursery class for three- and four-year-olds, with 26 part-time places.
In May 2026, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Talking and learning to get along with others are central to the early years curriculum. In everyday parent terms, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here combines learning through play with activities guided by adults. Children have opportunities to explore independently as well as learn with staff, rather than spending the whole session on adult-directed tasks.
Daily storytelling, singing and rhymes give language practice a familiar rhythm. Exploring minibeasts and introducing a weekly sound are examples of adults teaching vocabulary through something concrete. Staff demonstrate new words and positive behaviour, helping children develop both their communication and their relationships with others.
Learning builds in stages, informed by what children can do when they start. In May 2026, the early years environment had resources that supported purposeful exploration and curiosity. Outdoor learning also has a place: children across the school take part in Forest schools sessions during the year. This gives the curriculum an outdoor dimension alongside its emphasis on talk and play.
Warm relationships between adults and children were a strength of early years in May 2026. Care for the youngest children helped them feel secure, making those relationships an important part of the day as well as the learning. Staff's understanding of children's starting points also shaped the curriculum, linking care with individual learning needs.
For families needing additional support, the school has an early years SEN Support Teacher, and its Special Educational Needs Team can be reached at sen-team@bidstonvillage.wirral.sch.uk. Four sensory rooms form part of the school's wider wellbeing provision, providing spaces intended to help children manage their emotions. These are school facilities, rather than rooms described as belonging to the nursery.
School lunches follow a three-week menu cycle, with a choice between cold and hot food each day. A deli-bar option is also offered. This describes the school's catering provision rather than an entitlement to nursery meals.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place at Bidston Village. Families must make a separate application through Wirral Local Authority, which allocates Reception places. Apply again through that route by the deadline for your child's entry year; the nursery application does not replace it.
Nursery sessions run from 8:40am to 11:40am or from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Those fixed morning and afternoon windows give families a clear basis for planning collection.
The school offers 15 funded hours each week in term time from the term after a child's third birthday. It also offers 30-hour places for working parents within a specified income bracket, limited to 10 spaces. Sunflowers requires a two-year funding code and serves children whose parents receive specified benefits.
Nursery applications use the school's online application form. For enquiries, call 0151 652 0673 or email schooloffice@bidstonvillage.wirral.sch.uk. Daytime school visits can be booked through the office, giving prospective parents an opportunity to see school activity before deciding.
