Songs and storytelling give the youngest children a purposeful start at St Paul's Catholic Primary School in Prenton. The nursery takes children aged two, three and four, with Pre School Twos provision alongside F1 nursery sessions. It operates within the school's registration, rather than as a separate nursery.
The distinction between the age groups matters. Ofsted's report dated 6 May 2026 judged early years as Needs attention, while finding effective leadership, teaching and care in the provision for two-year-olds. Families should weigh that positive start alongside the weaknesses affecting the wider early years experience.
For two-year-olds, conversation, singing and stories are used deliberately to build communication. In May 2026, children developed well even when they started with few words. Adults understood individual needs and used those everyday activities to help children express themselves. Language development is a concrete strength of this youngest provision.
Across early years, developing children's speech is a priority, supported by regular work with a specialist. Early reading also receives attention from the beginning. However, children did not consistently get chances to use their new learning during ordinary activities. Teaching a skill and giving children opportunities to practise it were not reliably connected.
Nursery children are taught alongside the Reception group. In May 2026, activities and learning spaces were not consistently suited to children's developmental stages, and adults sometimes missed opportunities to deepen children's ideas or extend their talk. These weaknesses limited preparation for the next stage of learning. Staff development to make these exchanges more frequent and more effective was an explicit improvement priority. For parents, the important distinction is between the strong language work with two-year-olds and the less consistent learning experience beyond it.
The two-year-old provision combines staff training with close knowledge of each child. In May 2026, children became comfortable quickly, developed confidence and felt secure. Parents valued the staff's willingness to help and the care given to their youngest children. That supports a reassuring picture of the initial adjustment to nursery.
Support for two-year-olds with special educational needs and/or disabilities was effective and tailored to the child, including those with an education, health and care plan. Identification of additional needs begins in early years. This gives families a basis for discussing their child's particular needs when arranging a visit.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Learning alongside the Reception group is a teaching arrangement; it should not be treated as an admissions entitlement.
F1 children on the 15-hour pattern attend morning sessions from 8:45am to 11:45am each day. The 30-hour pattern runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm Monday to Thursday, then finishes at 12:45pm on Friday. That shorter Friday needs to fit the family's collection arrangements.
Pre School Twos sessions run from 9am to noon or from noon to 3pm. Nursery top-up sessions can be booked subject to availability. To arrange an appointment to see the setting, contact the school office on 0151 652 7828 or email schooloffice@stpauls.wirral.sch.uk. The nursery is at Farmfield Drive, Beechwood, Prenton, CH43 7TE.
