Nursery at Welton Primary School

Counting with objects and getting used to phonics routines give Welton's nursery a practical introduction to school learning. Children can start from age two, on the Welton Primary School site in Midsomer Norton. The school opened its own nursery in September 2022, following provision operated by Bumbles Daycare. This is the school's nursery provision, with its own flexible hours rather than simply the primary school timetable.
Language development and early number work provide concrete examples of the nursery's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning. In December 2024, nursery children were learning the pattern of the school's phonics programme, helping them participate in familiar routines. They also handled resources to start counting up to five. For parents, these are useful examples of learning through practical activity: objects make numbers tangible, while repeated routines help children understand how to join in.
Concentration is developing too. Ofsted's December 2024 inspection identified the beginnings of sustained attention from the Nursery Year. The school uses Unlocking Letters and Sounds, with nursery language development forming the groundwork for later phonics teaching.
Beyond the nursery, the school grounds contain woodland, ponds and an outdoor classroom, alongside a fire pit cabin. The wider outdoor learning site includes space for building dens and a wildlife area. These are distinct physical features of the school setting; they give families a concrete picture of the surroundings in which the nursery sits.
The nursery staffing structure for 2024-2025 included key workers and a nursery leader. For families, that identifies a nursery team within the wider school organisation.
Additional needs have a school contact through the special educational needs coordinator at sen@weltonprimaryschool.co.uk. Welton aims to support children's learning in partnership with their families. Parents can also contact the local children's speech and language therapy team for advice during term time, on Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm. Attention, listening and language development are the focus of the associated family advice.
Safeguarding arrangements include child protection training for all school staff and MyConcern for logging and tracking concerns. Food is part of the school's healthy eating aims: Welton describes promoting healthy snacks and nutritious lunches. That is a school-wide position, rather than a description of a particular nursery menu.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority route and meet its deadline. September Reception applications go to the local authority, while nursery enquiries go directly to Welton. Keep these as two separate decisions: choosing the nursery does not secure the next school place.
Nursery hours are flexible. Contact nursery@weltonprimaryschool.co.uk or call 01761 413131 to enquire about joining. A school visit can be arranged through the office on the same telephone number, giving parents an opportunity to discuss the nursery before deciding. The school address is Radstock Road, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, BA3 2AG.
