Nursery at Scargill Infant School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Kindness, curiosity, independence and resilience are Scargill’s stated values. Its nursery belongs to the infant school on Mungo Park Road in Rainham, with an EYFS lead who also teaches the nursery and a team of nursery support staff. That places nursery teaching within the school’s early years team.
Listening to sounds is the clearest concrete strand of nursery learning here. Phase 1 phonics includes sounds from the environment, instruments and the body, alongside rhyme and rhythm. The emphasis is on hearing and distinguishing sounds, giving children something to practise before tackling written words.
Voice sounds and alliteration also feature, together with oral blending and segmenting. In plain language, those last two activities involve joining spoken sounds into a word and separating a spoken word into its sounds. This is preparation for reading through listening and speaking. It should be understood as an early learning strand rather than a description of the entire nursery session.
Nursery staffing combines a teacher with support staff. For additional learning needs, the school has a Local SEND Lead who also serves as deputy head, alongside a trust director responsible for SEND and inclusion. These are distinct school and trust roles, giving families an identifiable route for raising concerns.
Scargill aims to adapt learning challenges to individual pupils, account for their backgrounds and strengths, and address barriers through special arrangements. Parent consultations provide opportunities to discuss concerns with the class teacher, who records them. If a concern persists and a parent wishes to complain further, the Local SEND Lead meets them within five working days. Further stages involve the teacher, SEND lead and Group SENCo, followed by a written complaint to the head of school and, if necessary, the trust’s complaints process.
Sycamore Trust offers independent support for families living with autism or learning difficulties. Milk is another practical detail: children under five receive it free once registered for Cool Milk. Registration matters; the entitlement is conditional on completing that step.
Attending Scargill’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery attendance and Reception admission are separate decisions: families must apply again through the normal Reception application process by its deadline. Keep that application separate from choosing nursery provision, rather than treating continued attendance as an automatic next step.

For school uniform, logo items are optional and second-hand clothing is available through the office. Premier School Wear and Khalsa Schoolwear supply branded items, while ordinary uniform can be purchased from other retailers. The school’s clothing colours include burgundy knitwear and gold or yellow polo shirts. This gives families alternatives to buying every item branded.
