In the valley of the River Arrow in north Worcestershire, Redditch rose to Victorian prominence as the world centre of needle and fishing tackle manufacture, with the town and its surroundings producing the vast majority of the world's needles by the late nineteenth century. The town now counts around 82,000 residents, its footprint shaped by planned expansion into surrounding villages from the 1960s onwards.
Hunt End and Astwood Bank are among the most school-competitive pockets in the borough, drawing families seeking primary places in the suburban fringe, while Matchborough, one of the new town's purpose-built districts, has long been a school-competitive corner of Redditch. Headless Cross and Church Hill extend the residential spread northward. Redditch station links the town to Birmingham New Street via the Cross-City line in around forty minutes.
