With roots traced to the first century BC and formal settlement established in the medieval era, Solihull grew along the River Blythe within the ancient Forest of Arden, eight miles southeast of Birmingham in the West Midlands. The town secured a place in 20th-century industrial history as the birthplace of the Land Rover marque, whose vehicles are still assembled at the Solihull plant. Around 127,000 people live within the town today. The wider metropolitan borough reaches 216,000, with three-quarters of its land designated as green belt. Olton and Dorridge mark the residential edge, the latter reaching the borough’s quieter outer reaches.
Widney Manor and Shirley form the school-competitive belt to the south, drawing families who prioritise access to the town’s state provision, while Solihull Town Centre anchors a compact commercial and residential core. Solihull station links the town to Birmingham Moor Street along the Chiltern Railways corridor.
