Nursery at Oak Hill First School

Daily outdoor play and a qualified teacher give Oak Hill’s nursery its defining shape. A spacious outdoor area sits close to the classroom, bringing nature and active play into the children’s day. This is the school’s own nursery class, based on Wirehill Drive in Lodge Park, Redditch.
Play is the starting point. The nursery aims to develop curiosity, creativity and early social skills through activities that let children learn at their own pace. For families choosing a school nursery, the useful distinction here is the combination of teacher leadership and daily time outdoors.
Children can attend a morning or afternoon session, with a lunchtime interval for those attending full time. Each half-day lasts three hours. Outdoor activity happens daily, giving children opportunities to explore nature and move energetically alongside their classroom learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides the provision. It brings learning, development and care together for children from birth to five; here, play-based activities are the nursery’s way of putting that framework into practice. The nursery aims to build children’s interest in learning alongside their ability to play and interact with others.
Oak Hill’s Foundation Stage curriculum also uses a tailored Early Years Companion. The wider school curriculum follows KASE: Knowledge, Attributes, Skills and Experiences. Oak Hill aims to develop confidence and empathy alongside communication and collaboration, giving families a sense of the intentions behind the activities rather than simply a timetable of subjects.
A qualified teacher leads the nursery staff. Oak Hill also has an Early Years Phase Lead, early-years teaching assistants and an Access, Inclusion and Support Team. These roles place the nursery within the school’s teaching and inclusion structure.
ClassDojo connects families and teachers through messages, photographs and videos of classroom learning. Parents can use it to ask questions, so communication can continue during the school day. For SEND discussions, the SENDCo can be contacted through the office or Dojo, with an inclusion email route also available. Oak Hill aims to adapt teaching so children with SEND can participate in their curriculum.
Full-time children have lunch between the two sessions, from 11:30am to 12:15pm. That interval is part of the nursery timetable and matters when planning a longer day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Worcestershire County Council is the school’s admissions authority; the council’s school-place application route is the starting point for that next application.
Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions. A place in the nursery should never be taken as confirmation of a later school place.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoon sessions run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The nursery’s funding offer starts with 15 free childcare hours from the term after a child turns three. Working families may qualify for 30 hours, subject to eligibility.
Prospective families can arrange a nursery visit through the school office, and there is a nursery application form. Telephone 01527 528 523 to contact the school. A visit offers a practical opportunity to see the classroom and nearby outdoor area before choosing the provision.
