Nursery at Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School

At a Glance

Scooters, Makaton signing and Forest School give Rainbow Nursery its character: children learn through movement, conversation and play they help choose. This is Holy Trinity’s own nursery on the school site in Richmond, accepting children from three, with a maximum of 52 across its provision. September entry follows a child’s third birthday; January entry depends on vacancies.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 1 and 2 April 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

Choice shapes the learning. Resources remain accessible for children to follow their interests, while the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. In parent terms, that means learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently alongside early literacy, maths, understanding the world and creative expression.

Stories, poems and songs support language, with pictures and Makaton signing helping children understand and contribute. Maths Mastery follows the curriculum of the National Center of Excellence in The Teaching of Mathematics: children explore numbers from 0 to 10, tackle problems, investigate shapes and compare measurements. These ideas have practical uses. In April 2025, early years children used an Easter egg hunt to practise placing numbers along a number line.

Rainbow’s outdoor learning area extends the classroom. Tricycles and scooters give children opportunities to practise movement and judging space; puzzles, threading and sensory materials exercise smaller hand movements needed for mark making. The garden and Forest School bring seasonal changes into their learning.

STEM adds experiments and problem solving through children’s interests. Role play as builders or engineers introduces language alongside practical discovery, while art, singing and work with materials provide other ways to express ideas. This is a day built around doing and talking.

Care and Support

Feelings have a shared vocabulary here. Zones of Regulation uses coloured categories to help children explain their emotional state, and adults model friendship and cooperative play. Self-care also receives attention, so learning includes managing personal needs as well as joining activities.

For children with special educational needs, preparation can begin before nursery starts. Where possible, EYFS teachers meet children at home or in their previous setting to plan support. The application form also requests transition information from an existing nursery or playgroup and asks families about allergies, medical conditions and additional educational needs.

The school’s SEND arrangements give parents a route through the class teacher and SENCO. Support plans are reviewed with families each term. Ramps provide physical access across the school site, a concrete consideration for children with mobility needs.

Children staying for lunch need a healthy packed lunch. The nursery policy specifies this rather than a cooked school meal, so families should build lunch preparation into their routine.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For September 2027 entry, families must make a separate application through their home local authority’s Common Application Form, naming Holy Trinity, by 15 January 2027.

There is a specific, conditional advantage in the 2027/28 admission arrangements: nursery attendance is the fifth oversubscription criterion, ahead of proximity. It applies to children holding a registered nursery place when they apply who continue attending until the preceding academic year ends. This gives priority under that criterion, not automatic entry. Families applying for a Foundation place must also complete the supplementary form.

For children with SEND moving between classes, information passes to the next teacher in advance; a transition book or social story can be prepared if needed. That support is separate from allocation of a place.

Practical Information

The 2025/26 timetable gives morning sessions as 8:30am to 11:30am and afternoons as 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The 30-hour pattern runs from 8:30am to 2:30pm. The 2025 application form also includes a paid extension to 3:30pm for children taking the extended entitlement, and additional daytime provision for those without it.

Universal entitlement covers 15 hours weekly; the extended arrangement combines that with another 15 for eligible families. They must maintain a validated HMRC eligibility code throughout their child’s attendance and inform the nursery immediately if their extended entitlement changes. Places follow school terms and are booked for five days each week for the whole academic year, or spring and summer terms if offered. Ad-hoc days are excluded. Charges for paid sessions still apply during absence. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery enquiries and tours go through the school office on 0208 940 2730. Application paperwork goes to info@htprimary.com with evidence of address and the child’s birth date.
