Formed in 1965 from the merger of the Municipal Boroughs of Richmond, Barnes, and Twickenham, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is the only London borough to straddle both banks of the River Thames. Whitton and Ham extend the residential spread on the Middlesex and Surrey sides respectively. Around 198,000 people live across the borough today.

Hampton, in the south of the borough, is among the most sought-after catchment areas for school places, while Barnes and Twickenham together form a school-competitive arc that draws families competing for primary and secondary level places. Richmond Park, the largest park in London, anchors the open character of the southern half, and Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace sit within the borough's boundaries alongside WWT London Wetlands Centre. South Western Railway services from Richmond and Twickenham reach London Waterloo in around twenty minutes, and the District line connects the borough to central London via its Richmond terminus.
