Nursery at King's School, Rochester

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A seven-hour core day and care across 50 weeks give Little King’s a practical character of its own within King's School, Rochester. From September 2026, the provision covers Nursery and Pre-Reception for ages 2–4, bringing younger children into the school’s early-years provision.

Chadlington House on Lockington Grove is the nursery’s base. That gives families a specific nursery address to use when planning a visit, rather than the school’s main address at Satis House.

The Nursery Day

Communication and learning alongside other children are central to the early-years experience. In April 2024, ISI found that the early-years curriculum helped children become more confident in conversations with adults and other children. The practical benefit is participation: learning includes speaking, listening and joining in with others.

At that inspection, early-years children voted to choose their daily reading book. This turned a familiar story-time decision into an early experience of making a choice together. Through shared play, they learnt to resolve disagreements and take responsibility for their small community. These were concrete examples of early-years learning reaching beyond individual tasks.

Stay and Play offers families a taste of activity in the nursery, with stories, exploration and play. Fingerprint caterpillars and Oobleck feature among the examples. These are family sessions rather than a timetable for enrolled children, but they give parents a useful way to meet the nursery team and introduce their child to playing alongside others.

Care and Support

Kindness and teamwork are taught from the youngest years. The nursery’s emphasis on relationships therefore connects directly with the shared play and conflict-solving described above: getting along with other children forms part of learning itself.

The Junior School has a Head of Early Years Foundation Stage, alongside its teaching and teaching-assistant teams. For families considering a funded place, the meal arrangements deserve attention too. Standard nursery teaching and snacks are included within funded session delivery; lunch carries an additional charge. Lunch should therefore be considered separately when planning attendance.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Keep the Reception application separate from the decision to use the nursery.

For Reception entry, parents can arrange a tour, register their child online and organise a morning or day at school. This visit is used to assess literacy, numeracy and the child’s approach to learning and other people. The route is through the school’s Admissions team. Nursery families should confirm with Admissions which steps apply to existing pupils, rather than treating nursery enrolment as confirmation of the next place.

Practical Information

The core session runs from 08:30 to 15:30. Additional care is offered from 07:30 to 08:30 and from 15:30 to 18:30, extending the possible day for families whose work hours require it. There are 38-week and 50-week attendance options.

Booking changes. Attendance must be agreed in advance using the Nursery Session Booking Form. Reservations cannot be changed once a term begins, and changing nursery provision requires a term’s notice. This suits families able to plan their pattern ahead; illness or other absence does not generate a refund.

Funding covers 15 hours for children aged 3 and 4 and for eligible two-year-olds. The funded-only option provides up to 570 hours across 38 weeks, including four designated holiday weeks. Tax-Free Childcare is accepted as a payment method. Ask the school for current charges for lunch and additional care.

Contact Admissions at admissions@kings-rochester.co.uk or on 01634 888590. Individual tours, open mornings and small-group visits can be booked.
