Nursery at Warren Wood Primary School

Songs, rhymes and play give Snowdrop class its character. This is Warren Wood Primary School’s own nursery on Arethusa Road in Rochester, with up to 26 children in each session. Children can join from the term after their third birthday, subject to the age eligibility dates and available places. A qualified teacher works alongside support staff, giving the provision a classroom teaching structure from the start.
Play, experimenting and spending time with other children form the nursery’s approach. Learning goals follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework: play and exploration sit alongside planned learning. Paintings, drawings, photographs and early writing become records of children’s progress, so learning is captured through what children make and do.
Twinkl Phonics supplies the early reading programme. Its first level focuses on listening and speaking, including rhyme, sounds made with the body and recognising sounds in the surroundings. These activities prepare children to distinguish the sounds within words. Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) also brings a practical clothing requirement: children need wellies and waterproof clothing or a puddle suit for outdoor play.
At the Ofsted inspection on 20 and 21 May 2025, early years provision was judged Requires improvement. Nursery children joined enthusiastically in rhymes and songs and made a positive start with letters and sounds. However, weaknesses in remembering and using learning began in early years, leaving too many children short of essential curriculum knowledge. For parents, that makes the next steps in a child’s learning an important part of progress discussions.
Before starting, children and parents are invited to meet the nursery teacher and tour the classroom after a place has been offered. This gives the child a chance to meet an adult who will teach them and become familiar with the room. Tapestry, a secure online learning journal, lets parents see achievements recorded by the team. Families can also contact the class directly at snowdrop@warrenwoodprimary.co.uk, or use sen@warrenwoodprimary.co.uk for SEND enquiries.
Lunch is provided by Independent Catering and prepared in the school kitchens. Children have three main meal choices, vegetables, a salad bar and four dessert options. Nursery lunches are charged unless the child qualifies for a free school lunch; ask the school for current charges. Nursery children up to age five automatically receive a free daily carton of cow’s milk. There is no non-dairy substitute within that milk arrangement, which matters for families avoiding dairy.
In May 2025, behaviour routines were already established from early years, supporting positive approaches to learning. Staff also receive annual safeguarding training, and families can raise welfare concerns through safeguarding@warrenwoodprimary.co.uk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Medway Council using the normal application process and meeting its deadline. Choosing Snowdrop therefore means choosing the nursery experience itself; it does not secure the next school place.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons are 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The all-day option starts at 8.30am and finishes at 3.15pm. Collection is through the Foundation Stage Gate, with the finish time determined by the child’s booked pattern.
Both 15-hour and 30-hour funded places are offered. The 15-hour allocation can be used for mornings, afternoons or across 2.5 days, with charges for time beyond the funded allocation. For children using 30-hour funding across the full school week, the 33.75-hour week creates an additional charge for 3.75 hours. Eligible families must supply their funding code before starting and renew their eligibility checks during the year.
Additional sessions for children on 15-hour funding are permanent bookings that cannot then be changed. Increases depend on space and begin at the next intake. Attendance and notice. Children are expected to attend their booked weekly sessions unless there is a valid reason for absence; three consecutive weeks of missed booked sessions can trigger a place review. Withdrawal requires a term’s notice, so the pattern needs to suit family routines.
