At a Glance

Play, shared books and learning that follows children's interests give Mawney's nursery its character. The school uses planning in the moment across its early years settings, placing exploration and children's ideas within the learning approach. This is a school nursery on Mawney Road in Romford, which opened in September 2017.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 20 and 21 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of learning. Three concentrate on communication and language, physical development, and children's personal, social and emotional development. For parents, that means learning includes listening, talking, movement, managing feelings and building relationships, alongside the beginnings of more formal skills.

The other four areas cover mathematics, literacy, expressive arts and design, and understanding the world. Numbers and shapes sit alongside reading and writing; imaginative activity sits alongside learning about people and the world around them. The school aims to provide active play indoors and outside, giving children opportunities to explore through more than one kind of activity.

Planning in the moment is the named approach. The learning framework includes pretending, taking roles in play, exploring with the senses and testing ideas. It also values concentration, persistence and changing an approach when a problem proves difficult. These are useful priorities for families who want play to have purpose: children are encouraged to make decisions and keep trying, as well as complete an activity.

In May 2025, children in early years enjoyed a broad repertoire of songs, stories and rhymes. Staff shared carefully selected books to introduce reading. Books therefore have a clear place alongside exploration and imaginative play.

Care and Support

Children settled quickly into early years in May 2025. For a parent considering a first experience of education away from home, that is a useful finding about the start children made.

An EYFS team sits within the school's staffing structure. School SEND support includes adults working alongside pupils in class and intervention programmes outside it; some pupils may receive individual classroom support. Parents with concerns can contact the special educational needs coordinator at sen@mawney.havering.sch.uk. This gives families a direct route to discuss their child's needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority; Havering residents use www.eadmissions.org.uk. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions.

For the September 2026 Reception intake, applications closed on 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. It belongs to that intake, rather than a future application cycle.

Practical Information

Nursery applications go to the School Office: complete the admission form and return it with the supplementary evidence forms. General enquiries can be made by email to office@mawney.havering.sch.uk or by telephone on 01708741612. The nursery is part of The Mawney Foundation School at Mawney Road, Romford, RM7 7HR.
