A two-year cycle of topics, outdoor exploration and learning shaped by children’s interests give Cygnets its character. This is Bawnmore Community Infant School’s pre-school provision for children aged three and four, on Bawnmore Road in Rugby. Cygnets has its own pre-school building within the school setting, giving it a distinct physical base.
The school’s early years provision received a Needs attention judgement in January 2026. That judgement covers early years across the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the important balance is between caring relationships and weaknesses in the teaching of writing and language.
Play and practical exploration shape learning in Cygnets. The curriculum follows a two-year rolling programme, connects with Reception topics and changes in response to children’s experiences and interests. Books, outdoor learning and activities children can return to independently provide different ways into those topics. The intention is to give children room to explore while adults keep learning connected.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the Cygnets curriculum brings together early number, language and literacy, movement, creativity and learning about the world. Social development and understanding feelings sit alongside these. For a parent, this means preparation for school extends beyond reading and counting to communicating, becoming independent and learning with other children.
In January 2026, the early years curriculum built learning in a logical sequence, and teaching worked well in most areas. Reading and mathematics were strengths. Stories, singing and rhymes gave children opportunities to develop language, but adult conversations did too little to expand vocabulary or encourage fuller responses. Support for writing was also inconsistent, limiting progress. These are substantive concerns: the quality of everyday conversation and guidance matters as much as the activities themselves.
Shared play and learning brought children enjoyment in the January 2026 early years findings. Adults helped children focus and handle their feelings, while warmth and mutual respect characterised their relationships. These findings give parents reassurance about children’s wellbeing during the nursery day.
For families needing additional support, the school’s SEND coordinator can be contacted through the school office. Safeguarding concerns can also be raised with a designated safeguarding lead through that route.
School lunches are prepared on site each day by Educaterers Ltd. Choices include vegetarian meals, jacket potatoes and a salad bar, and kitchen staff accommodate individual dietary needs. These are the school’s meal arrangements; they should not be read as a promise that lunch is included in a Cygnets session.
Attending Cygnets does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Warwickshire’s admissions service and meet the normal application deadline. Warwickshire residents can apply online through the county council’s admissions route. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Preparation for starting school includes a summer meeting for parents, classroom time with the new teacher and a home visit from the teacher and classroom assistant. These arrangements help children become familiar with the adults and setting before starting. They are transition support, not an admissions advantage.
Contact the school office on 01788 810065 or email admin2423@welearn365.com for enquiries. Prospective parent tours can be booked by telephone, giving families a direct way to see the setting.
For journeys to the school site, use the pedestrian gates and paths. Parents cannot park on site because space is limited, so allow for the walk from your parking place when planning collection and drop-off.

The January 2026 judgement was Needs attention for the school’s early years provision. Caring relationships, reading and mathematics were strengths, but writing support and conversations that develop language required improvement. This was not a separate nursery judgement.
