Three classrooms, their own entrances and cloakrooms, and access to the school library give this nursery a distinct base within the infant school. The purpose-built provision takes children from 2 years 9 months until they move to Reception and runs during term time. Each room accommodates up to 24 children per session.
Red and Blue Rooms serve the academic year immediately before Reception. Rainbow Room offers up to an additional year, depending on a child’s birthday. That organisation groups children by school year, rather than treating the nursery as one undifferentiated class.
Learning moves between indoor activities and outdoor space. The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum combines physical and social development with creative play, mathematics and early literacy: children explore materials, use their imagination and begin recognising letters, reading and writing. The outdoor area supports movement and imaginative activity, while access to the school’s hall for PE, library and ICT suite extends the spaces available beyond the nursery classrooms.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the phonics approach used in nursery. Books also travel home for shared enjoyment. Nursery children choose a sharing book for an adult to read with them; the purpose is enjoying stories together, rather than expecting a child to read independently. This gives families a concrete way to join in with early reading.
Visitors provide another link between learning and everyday life. Examples include police officers, firefighters and a mobile farm bringing animals to the outdoor area. These encounters give children people, equipment and animals to connect with their classroom learning. The nursery also aims to offer an optional school trip before the academic year ends; this is an intention rather than a guaranteed outing.
A fully qualified team of 12 works with routines adapted to the children’s ages. Parents receive photographs and learning observations through Evidence Me, with updates emailed monthly and opportunities to add to the online learning journals. This creates a regular connection between activities in nursery and conversations at home.
Lunch can be hot or brought from home. For packed lunches, families are asked to provide just three healthy items and a named beaker. Water is supplied during the day, alongside milk and a free fruit snack in the morning or afternoon. Dairy allergies should be discussed with the team. Changes to a child’s meal pattern require a full half term’s notice, so lunch choices need some forward planning.
Support includes identifying barriers to learning and providing specific interventions. Where a child needs additional help, the nursery and school follow the 2014 SEND Code of Practice and involve relevant outside agencies for guidance and support. The emphasis is on responding to individual needs, giving families a basis for discussing the support their child requires.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, following its normal application deadline. Warwickshire residents are encouraged to apply online. Choosing the nursery therefore requires a separate decision and application for the next stage.
Transition activities are distinct from admission. In the final half term before moving on, pre-school children who have been offered a Reception place can spend time in those classrooms every week. That repeated contact gives them opportunities to become familiar with the next learning space before the move.
Owls provides additional care during term time for nursery children aged 2 years 9 months onwards: 8am to 8.45am and 3.15pm to 6pm. Activities include construction, cooking, creative work and outdoor play when weather permits. Breakfast is an optional charged extra available only to children arriving before 8.15am; afternoon care includes a snack and drink, with dietary requirements catered for.
Funding can cover up to 30 hours weekly once a child turns three, depending on their birthday and eligibility. Charges apply to children who do not qualify and to sessions beyond grant coverage. A lunchtime session charge applies whether a child eats a hot meal or a packed lunch. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery uniform is optional, and wellies are encouraged for daily outdoor activity, with pairs available to borrow. Visits can be arranged through the nursery manager on 01788 810292; enquiries also go to office@dunchurchinfants.co.uk. Parking. Spaces on neighbouring residential roads are limited, so allow time for collection and drop-off.
