Red brick market buildings ring a compact town-centre that has served the Staffordshire parishes flanking the north-eastern edge of Cannock Chase for centuries, with the River Trent marking Rugeley's eastern boundary. In July 1962, the town made national history when the council chairman placed the first live call via the Telstar satellite to Western Springs, Illinois, in a feat broadcast on national television.
Around 26,000 people lived here at the 2021 Census, with families searching for school places particularly drawn to Penkridge Bank and Colton, both widely regarded as school-competitive addresses within Cannock Chase District. Etching Hill offers a quieter residential alternative to the south. Chase Line trains connect Rugeley Trent Valley to Birmingham New Street in around fifty minutes.
