Digging, planting and daily outdoor exploration give Saplings a practical, playful character. This governor-run nursery at Hob Hill CE/Methodist (VC) Primary School takes children aged 3 and 4, usually accommodating up to 26 pupils. It sits within the school's early years provision, with learning planned across the nursery and the next stage.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 January 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. The early years findings give parents a useful picture: children settled successfully, while adults helped them become more independent and manage their feelings.
Play and teaching led by adults both shape the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum works across seven learning areas, with stories, children's interests and practical experiences providing starting points. Adults introduce vocabulary and develop conversations, so learning happens through talk as well as through activities.
Indoors, children can move between spaces for model building, imaginative play and miniature worlds, alongside creative activities, writing and maths. These areas let children return to an idea and practise it in different ways. A reading corner is accessible during daily independent play, with its books refreshed regularly.
Outdoors is a daily part of learning. Children investigate through planting and digging, practise balance and climbing, and work on building activities. Hob Hill values outdoor play whatever the weather, making the outdoor area part of the learning environment rather than simply a break from it.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the early reading programme. Nursery phonics focuses first on listening and speaking, including awareness of sounds and preparation for blending sounds orally. Suggested activities include making shakers, listening walks and rhyme games. Children also choose a book each week to share at home, giving families a regular way to enjoy stories together.
Maths combines play with teaching in small groups. Children explore measures, shapes and numbers, using objects to work through ideas and practising mathematical vocabulary. This gives early number learning a concrete starting point.
The early years team includes an EYFS and early reading lead alongside teaching assistant roles. In January 2024, children were settling successfully, and their curriculum supported social development alongside preparation for reading and maths. Adults helped children understand feelings and develop independence, both useful foundations for joining in with nursery life.
Tapestry connects learning with home. Parents can follow their child's experiences and progress, then contribute comments and media of their own. ParentHub carries messages for families, classes and individuals, providing another route for practical communication.
Additional needs are identified through observation and assessment in early years. WellComm Speech and Language Screening is among the tools used. The school's support cycle moves through assessment, planning, action and review, with parents involved in reviewing progress. Play-Doh Therapy is aimed predominantly at early years and Key Stage 1; it can support communication individually or in small groups. Families can contact the SEND coordinator through the office.
Wise Owls provides breakfast and snack options as part of its wraparound care, including for nursery children.
A separate application matters. A Saplings place does not guarantee admission to Hob Hill's Reception. Families must apply again through Staffordshire Primary School Admissions; for entry in September 2027, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery booking.
Learning is sequenced across nursery and Reception, allowing children to revisit ideas as they progress. That curriculum continuity concerns learning, not the allocation of a school place.
Nursery applications can be sent to the school office at any time. Contact 01889 228720 or office@hobhill.staffs.sch.uk for enquiries; visits can also be arranged through the school.
Wise Owls offers nursery children breakfast care from 7.30 to 8.45 am and after-school options from 3.15 to 4.30 pm or 3.15 to 6.00 pm. Booking and payment use Parent Pay. Contact the school for current charges.
Drop-off and collection take place at the classroom door, reached through the gate into the EYFS outdoor area. Tell the office promptly if collection arrangements change. Nursery has a uniform, and school INSET days are closed to pupils.
