On the south bank of the River Mersey where the estuary narrows to form the Runcorn Gap, Runcorn has served as a crossing point and port since Æthelflæd of Mercia founded a fortification here in 915 AD. The Bridgewater Canal extension of 1776 transformed the Cheshire town into an industrial hub linking Liverpool with inland Staffordshire, and in 1964 a new-town designation pushed the settlement eastward to a population of around 61,000.
Windmill Hill and Sandymoor lie among the most sought-after neighbourhoods for school catchments in the expanded eastern districts, while Halton Brook draws families competing for primary places. Runcorn Old Town and Halton Lodge anchor the riverside core. The Silver Jubilee Bridge and Mersey Gateway carry road traffic across to Widnes, and Runcorn railway station on the Liverpool to Manchester Northern Rail corridor reaches Liverpool Lime Street in around twenty minutes.
