Play, independence and getting to know each child shape Halton Lodge’s stated nursery approach. This is the nursery within Halton Lodge Nursery & Primary School on Grangeway in Runcorn, where children can begin from age three. A nursery teacher and a nursery teaching assistant form the named teaching roles, giving families a clear starting point for understanding who supports their child.
The nursery aims to help children become confident learners and build friendships through play. Its emphasis is on the individual child and partnership with families, rather than simply preparing children for the next classroom.
Indoor and outdoor learning both feature in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Children can choose resources within the continuous provision areas: spaces equipped for learning through play, with materials adapted to the children’s needs. Imagination and creativity are explicit aims. That gives children opportunities to explore their own ideas alongside activities planned by adults.
Play is the nursery’s stated means of encouraging exploration and independence. For children needing additional help with communication, the school uses Welcomm Assessment and therapist-recommended activities. Visual symbols and timetables are also among its support tools, making routines and expectations easier to understand.
Settling begins with opportunities to become familiar with people and places. Nursery children have Stay & Play sessions, and home visits involve two staff members. Phased introductions can support children who find transitions difficult. These arrangements give families several ways to help a child approach the change gradually.
Development is assessed when children enter nursery. Information from a previous early-years setting can inform planning where a special educational need has already been identified. Parents should raise initial concerns with the class teacher; the teacher and SENCo can then consider support, further assessment or referrals.
SEND Support Plans are reviewed at least termly, while progress against targets is considered at least half termly. Parents can discuss needs at SEND Parents Evening or request a meeting with the teacher or SENCo. This creates opportunities to adjust support as needs change.
The school building occupies one floor, with wheelchair access between outside and inside and graduated playground slopes. These are practical features for families considering physical access. Reasonable adjustments and individual adaptations are arranged with parents where needed.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Halton Local Authority’s online Admissions Scheme before the January deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step, even when a child is already settled at Halton Lodge.
Familiarisation is separate from allocation. Transition arrangements include visits for new Reception children, a summer move-up day and meetings between class teachers. These help children encounter their next setting and allow staff to exchange information; they do not secure admission.
Nursery enquiries and applications go directly to the school office. Families can arrange a nursery visit, making it possible to meet the staff and discuss their child before applying.
