Nursery at St Mary's Catholic Primary School

Stories start early at St Mary's: children in the pre-school enjoy listening to carefully chosen books, giving shared reading a place in their first experience of school life. This is provision for two- to four-year-olds, managed by the school's governing body and based on the school site in Ryde.
Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection on 24 and 25 June 2025. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separate nursery inspection. For families, the useful distinction is between that broader judgement and the particular experience of a child attending the pre-school.
Established routines give the pre-school day its structure. The June 2025 inspection found these in place from pre-school onwards, a useful foundation for children getting used to school life.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together: reading, writing and mathematics sit alongside communication, physical, social, personal and creative development. It is a framework concerned with how children develop as well as what they learn.
There is an important qualification to the positive early years judgement. In June 2025, some intended learning in early years needed clearer definition: staff did not always have sufficiently precise guidance about the content to teach. For parents, this makes the detail of what children are learning important, alongside the opportunities to play and explore.
Safeguarding concerns are recorded through CPOMS. The school aims to discuss concerns with families promptly, although referrals to the MASH team can involve advice against contacting parents during an investigation. That qualification matters: communication with families is part of the process, while some concerns require a different response.
For children with additional needs, the school aims to combine its own expertise with help from specialists, including speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. This is a school support structure; a child's individual needs should remain the starting point for planning their support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority route and complete the school's Supplementary Information Form, returning it to the school office by the applicable deadline. Treat this as a fresh application.
Transition support is a separate matter. Links between the on-site pre-school and the school's transition programme help staff recognise children who will need additional support before starting Reception. That continuity can inform preparation for the change; it does not secure admission.
Contact the pre-school directly at stmaryspreschool@stmaryspri.co.uk or on 01983 563605 for enquiries. A preschool application form provides the nursery application route, separate from the later Reception process. Keeping those two steps distinct is the essential practical point for families considering both stages at St Mary's.
