Children’s own stories become shared storytelling through Helicopter Stories, while the school grounds give them space to explore changing seasons. Language and outdoor learning give River View’s nursery its character. There are 60 full time places for children aged 3-4 years old, within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) department in Salford.
This is a nursery with a school-day rhythm: children start at 8:45 and finish at 3:00. Its curriculum combines children’s own choices with teaching led by adults, so exploration sits alongside planned opportunities to practise new skills.
The EYFS brings together learning to communicate, managing feelings and developing physical skills with early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. In practice, children work independently, join groups of different sizes and take part in activities guided by adults. Teaching responds to their interests and stage of development, rather than expecting everyone to learn in the same way.
Language has concrete outlets here. Role-play areas and small-world play give children situations to talk through; with Helicopter Stories, adults write down children’s invented narratives so they can share them. Songs, rhymes and conversations introduce vocabulary. Nursery mark making uses paint, chalk and pencils, giving children different ways to experiment before writing becomes more formal.
Outside, extensive grounds support exploration of nature and seasonal change. Children investigate floating and sinking, magnets and forces, linking conversation with things they can test. Nursery also has a weekly PE session led by PE staff. Teachhandwriting begins with the physical preparation for writing, including posture, coordination and hand strength. Movement and early literacy connect in practical ways.
Mathematics grows from play and everyday situations: comparing size and weight, spotting patterns and putting objects in order. Construction toys, instruments, dressing up and junk modelling provide further ways to make and express ideas. In September 2023, Ofsted found that nursery children developed sound awareness that prepared them for later phonics teaching.
Relationships with a key person and other children form part of the nursery’s work on feelings and friendships. Adults help children recognise their own emotions and those of others, with simple expectations about treating people kindly. In September 2023, Ofsted found that children adapted quickly to nursery routines and that teachers created engaging, imaginative activities.
Wellcomm screening tracks each child’s language development, and children who need help communicating receive targeted support. Teachers observe children, listen to them and use what they learn to plan next steps; parents are involved when extra help is introduced. SEND support follows an assess, plan, do, review cycle, with personalised adjustments and targets. Families can contact the SEND team through the school office, giving them a direct route to discuss concerns.
Attending River View’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Salford City Council and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Treat that application as a separate task, even when your child already attends nursery.
Preparation for a new class is a different matter. Children take part in transition visits, and those needing additional help can have their transition tailored with guidance from the SEND team. That supports familiarity with the next stage; it does not secure admission.
The nursery timetable runs from 8:45 to 3:00, with lunch between 11:30 and 12:30. Full time provision gives families a consistent daily structure around which to plan collection and other commitments.
Nursery applications go through Salford City Council. Families are welcome to arrange a look around the Early Years department, and nursery enquiries can be made by calling 0161 921 2670. A visit provides an opportunity to see the learning spaces before making a choice.
