Communication, independence and sensory development give Springwood’s approach its character. Nursery provision sits at Craig Hall in Irlam, within a school where pupils have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Those plans describe the support and resources each pupil needs, making individual needs central to the provision rather than an addition to it.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for early learning, forms part of Springwood’s curriculum. Alongside it, the Springwood Teaching Framework connects teaching to children’s EHCP outcomes. Communication and independence sit alongside sensory and physical development, behaviour for learning, and cognition and learning. For parents, the practical emphasis is on what their child needs to learn next.
Learning follows themes, with different pathways shaping the teaching methods and content used. This allows activities to follow individual learning needs. The school describes personalised teaching programmes built around targets from EHCP outcomes, so the approach is more specific than a shared topic alone.
Books take several forms across the school: adapted reading materials, bag books and story sacks accompany storytelling and shared reading. These give children different ways to engage with stories. Reading books go home where appropriate, extending that involvement to families while retaining the qualification that this depends on the child.
Craig Hall’s building was designed to support children’s learning. Springwood describes that purpose as enabling learning for all its children; the physical setting and the personalised teaching approach therefore belong together.
The class teacher is the first contact for parents discussing special educational needs. Across Springwood, family liaison roles also sit within the support team. These are useful points of contact for families whose questions concern both learning and wider family circumstances.
Communication includes a free app carrying school messages and information. Discussions about progress take place through EHCP reviews, parents’ weeks, parents’ evenings and informal conversations with the teacher. That gives families several opportunities to contribute their own observations, rather than relying solely on a formal review meeting.
Salford’s Local Offer brings together information about education, health, transport, activities and support. It provides a wider context for families considering how school provision fits alongside other services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Salford Local Authority controls placements; families should confirm Reception arrangements with the authority. Springwood cannot accept placement requests directly from parents or carers. Pupils normally have an EHCP; rare assessment placements are used to establish needs and whether Springwood can meet them.
Craig Hall is on Preston Avenue, Irlam, M44 5XB. The school timetable runs from 9am to 3:15pm, Monday to Friday; these are school hours rather than a choice of nursery booking patterns.
