Communication and language give St Boniface’s early years provision its clearest focus. The nursery belongs to the Catholic primary school on Yew Street in Salford, with a nursery teacher listed within the teaching team. For parents, the distinction is between a familiar school setting and the quality of the learning within it.
Ofsted judged early years provision Requires improvement at the inspection on 7 and 8 January 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection. It deserves weight alongside the positive findings about children’s behaviour.
Language development receives explicit attention in early years. This makes speaking and understanding an important part of the educational emphasis, rather than treating preparation for school solely as learning to read.
Catholic teaching also shapes the curriculum. Religious education uses Lighting the Path and Come and See, with early years classes exploring Catholic teaching through topics linked to the church calendar and adapted to their age. Faith therefore forms part of what children learn, rather than simply describing the school’s identity.
Curriculum planning. In January 2025, some early years learning areas lacked a sufficiently clear account of the knowledge children should acquire and its teaching sequence. Staff consequently had difficulty planning suitable activities, weakening the way learning accumulated. Parents should weigh the language focus against this concern about the substance and sequence of teaching.
Checking learning. Assessment was another early years weakness at that point. Checks did not consistently reveal misunderstandings or lead to the teaching adjustments children needed. The practical concern is whether an activity helps a child move forward, rather than whether they have simply completed it.
Early years children generally behaved well in January 2025 and followed the school’s established behavioural expectations. This provides a positive counterweight to the curriculum concerns: children understood the routines governing their behaviour.
For additional needs, parents can arrange a discussion with the SENDCO, whose listed working days are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. That gives families a direct route to discuss support. The school also has a Family Liaison Officer who meets families by appointment during the school week, helps connect them with outside support and provides emotional support for children.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. The admissions policy explicitly separates the two. Families must apply again through Salford’s local authority admissions route, meeting the normal Reception application deadline. Familiarity with the school should not be mistaken for an entitlement to remain there.
An informal school visit can be arranged through the office manager. This gives families a practical opportunity to consider the setting before applying. For enquiries, use the contact form, email info@stbonifacesalford.co.uk or telephone 0161 566 7612. The school’s address is Yew Street, Salford, M7 2HL.
