At a Glance

Conversation, confidence and practical play set the direction here. Nursery children begin with an emphasis on communication, physical development and learning to feel comfortable with other people, giving those first experiences of education a clear purpose.

The nursery sits within this Catholic primary school on Mount Street in Salford. Children start from age three; together, the nursery and Reception classes make up the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), covering ages three to five. Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 May 2022. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult-guided learning both contribute to the day. Staff assess children through ordinary activities as well as more focused sessions, using photographs, children's work and conversations to decide what comes next. Parents' observations contribute too. Planning draws on children's interests and what staff have noticed in earlier activities, so the next step can respond to the child.

The EYFS curriculum brings together early language, movement and social development with literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. Development Matters helps staff plan age-related next steps and share these with parents. In nursery, the emphasis falls first on personal and social confidence, communication and physical skills. This gives learning a practical starting point: being comfortable with others and able to express yourself matters alongside early number and literacy work.

Indoor and outdoor learning areas provide space for children to investigate, explore and work independently. Resources and displays relate to the learning taking place. The environment therefore forms part of the curriculum, alongside play and focused work with adults.

Curriculum foundations. In May 2022, Ofsted found that early-years starting points had not been considered in some subjects, leaving children insufficiently prepared for later curriculum demands. Leaders were asked to identify the early-years knowledge needed for the next stage. For families, the relevant concern is how those early experiences build towards later learning.

Care and Support

Early-years children were settling promptly and managing familiar routines in May 2022. Communication gives parents several ways to stay involved: end-of-day conversations with teachers, termly progress meetings and topic letters each half term. Home-school diaries can be introduced where needed, providing another route for ongoing contact.

Personal care includes provision for toileting accidents in Foundation Stage. Additional intimate-care needs are discussed between parents and senior staff; medical plans involve families, relevant professionals and the SENCO. This makes care needs a matter for an agreed plan. The school's support arrangements also begin with parental discussion when staff think a child needs extra help, with specialist advice sought where further action is needed.

Food has its own routines. Early-years pupils receive afternoon fruit, and children under five have a daily carton of milk. Toast can be ordered through Parentpay each half term. School meals use School Grid and must be ordered before 8am that morning, making advance ordering part of the family's daily organisation.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The school's admissions page directs applications to Salford Local Authority. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that admissions cycle is now past.

Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions. Being part of the school's early-years provision does not itself secure the next place.

Practical Information

Cabin Club accepts nursery children for paid breakfast and after-school care. It occupies a cabin in the KS2 playground. Families can book for the year or use occasional bookings, with annual booking forms obtained from the office. Breakfast includes choices such as cereal, fruit and yoghurt; after-school care includes a snack.

The parent information gives breakfast care from 7.30am until 8.45am, while after-school collection must take place by 5pm. For current club charges, contact the school. Nursery enquiries can go to the office on 0161 834 4150 or thecathedralsch@st-peter-st-john.salford.sch.uk.
