Books, rhymes and conversation give The Friars nursery its character. Children encounter them from the beginning of their Nursery year, making language a central part of their first school experience. This is the school's own nursery on Cannon Street in Salford, with entry from age three and capacity for 30 nursery pupils.
Nursery belongs to the Foundation Stage team, which includes a nursery teacher and teaching assistants. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good following its 5 and 6 March 2024 inspection. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here gives children opportunities to talk, hear stories and play with friends. In March 2024, children in early years enjoyed learning and joined enthusiastically in play together. For parents, that places social interaction alongside the beginnings of reading.
Language receives sustained attention. Adults bring books and rhymes into children's experience from the start of Nursery and use opportunities across early years to develop their language. The named phonics approach is Read Write Inc. Speed Sounds, which can begin in Nursery. This introduces the sounds used in reading, alongside the broader experience of listening to stories.
EYFS Yoga appears in the extended learning offer, adding a movement activity to the early years experience. Nursery children also have opportunities to perform for parents during the year; the school's concert examples include Christmas and Harvest events. These give families a way to share in children's school experiences.
Reading continues at home. The early years homework guidance asks families to read aloud to children and share their reading books. Home learning is delivered through Seesaw and connects with classroom work, so parents have a practical link to learning beyond the nursery day.
A nursery teacher works alongside teaching assistants within the Foundation Stage team. For additional needs, parents have a direct route to the school's special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) through the main office. This provides a contact for discussing a child's support.
Communication includes parent meetings in the autumn and spring terms, plus a written progress report each year. Families can discuss concerns as well as learning targets. Appointments with a class teacher can also be arranged by emailing the office.
Meals come from Citywide Catering Services, with a menu rotating over three weeks. Children may bring a packed lunch instead. School meals are paid for ahead of time, with payment arranged by week, month or term. The school identifies itself as Nut Aware, a relevant consideration when preparing food from home.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Salford City Council handles the school's admissions, and applications are made online. Treat that application as a separate step when planning your child's next school year.
The EYFS day runs from 8.45am until 3.25pm, with registers closing at 8.55am. Those times matter when organising work and collection arrangements.
School uniform includes a red cardigan or sweatshirt, black trousers or a skirt, and a polo shirt in white or black. Plain items can be bought from supermarkets; some uniform items are also sold through the office.
For nursery place enquiries, contact the school directly. The main office number is 0161 566 7519 and its email is office@friarsprimaryschool.co.uk.
