Nursery at Hinde House 2-16 Academy

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Language gives this nursery its character: conversations with adults help the youngest children develop their speech, while older nursery children put a growing vocabulary to work in their play. First Steps serves two-year-olds; Foundation Stage 1 is for children aged three and four. These are the nursery stages within Hinde House 2-16 Academy.

The Ofsted inspection dated 10 February 2026 judged early years to be at the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Its nursery findings describe confident, settled children and effective support for the youngest age group.

The Nursery Day

Morning and afternoon sessions give the day a clear shape. Within those sessions, communication is a continuing focus across both nursery stages. In February 2026, adults' exchanges with two-year-olds helped children develop their language, and the emphasis continued into the Nursery Year alongside learning across the curriculum. For parents, the useful distinction is that talking and play are part of the learning itself.

Many children begin with speech and communication skills below the average. Staff recognise additional needs promptly and use their interactions with children to support development. By the Nursery Year, children were becoming more confident and using more words while playing. This makes language support relevant to everyday participation as well as preparation for later learning.

Care and Support

Settling starts with familiar people and gradual introductions. After a First Steps place is accepted and funding agreed, staff arrange a home visit and nursery tasters. Foundation Stage 1 entrants have meetings for parents and taster sessions after accepting a place. Stay-and-play visits also let parents accompany their children as they adjust to the setting.

A staff keyworker supports communication with each group of children's families. For children with additional needs, staff share observations at reviews, while keyworkers liaise with services such as speech and language therapy and the 0-5 SEND team, overseen by the SENCO. Parents contribute their understanding of their child to decisions about support.

For children using the qualifying 30-hour provision, lunch can be brought from home or ordered as a school meal. Lunchtime supervision carries an additional charge, and an ordered meal is charged separately. Ask the school for current charges when arranging this provision.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For the 2026–2027 entry cycle, it also conferred no admissions priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority; Sheffield residents can apply online through Sheffield City Council. The deadline for that cycle was 15 January 2026, which has already passed.

Transition support is a separate matter. Teachers exchange information before children change classes, parents meet the next teachers, and children spend introductory time with them. If a nursery child moves to another school, the Foundation Stage Leader handles the transition and transfer of information. These arrangements support continuity of care and learning; they do not alter admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

Sessions run Monday to Friday, with a morning or afternoon pattern. First Steps runs from 8.30am to 11.30am or from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. September and January are the main intake points. Nursery enquiries begin with the office: telephone or visit to request an application form.

Foundation Stage 1 provides 15 hours a week from the term following a child's third birthday. Qualifying working parents can access the 30-hour provision after applying through gov.uk and registering their requirement with the school. Two-year-old funding depends on eligibility, and the school can help with the application. Children already attending First Steps move into Foundation Stage 1 at the appropriate time, keeping that nursery progression distinct from the later Reception application.
